Karate Kid: Legends Surprised Me!

Alright…we have to talk about Karate Kid: Legends.

If you’re familiar with me, you’ll notice I’m quite fond of this particular series. Though I didn’t join the fandom from its inception (since I hadn’t arrived on the scene then), the Karate Kid movies have significantly impacted my life. I began appreciating it at a young age, and my affection for it has blossomed into a sincere admiration and respect for the entire collection – so much so that my partner and I nurture two bonsai trees named LaRusso and Miyagi, in honor of our deep-rooted love for this series.

Indeed, when I learned that there would be another film in this popular series, a mix of apprehension and eagerness arose within me. Introducing a new movie to an established franchise can sometimes tarnish its cinematic heritage. To be honest, the sequels of The Karate Kid didn’t resonate as strongly with many viewers as the original film did.

As a seasoned film enthusiast, I was eager to give the latest cinematic offering a chance, and boy, was I in for a treat! Here’s what made this movie worth my time, and trust me, you won’t want to miss out on it either.

In other words, as a long-standing movie buff, I seized the opportunity to catch the latest release, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations! Let me explain why this film is a must-see for any cinephile like ourselves.

I Wasn’t Expecting Much Going Into This

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that I didn’t harbor high expectations when I walked into the screening room. Frankly, there was a nagging doubt in my mind, a suspicion that this film might turn out to be a disappointment. In all honesty, that was the reality of my feelings beforehand.

Expanding franchises, especially when they aim to produce another sequel or combine characters from different movies (like LaRusso and Mr. Han), frequently result in less than satisfactory outcomes. This can lead to a poorly constructed narrative that the writer intended to be unique, or an illogical blend of characters who don’t seem compatible.

It’s somewhat similar to my initial impression, but let me rephrase that for you: When I first looked at the 2025 movie lineup, this film stood out as promising among many potential gems. Yet, I hadn’t anticipated it would be this year’s blockbuster sensation. However, the reality turned out to be quite distinct from my initial expectations.

But Honestly, I Ended Up Really Loving This Film

Is the “Karate Kid” movie the greatest one? No, but there’s a whole lot to appreciate in it. If you’re into action movies at their finest, you’ll find the fight scenes captivating. There’s something incredibly intense and genuine about watching people deliver powerful kicks and assert dominance in a full-blown karate match. For me, someone who trips over air (as I can barely kick a soccer ball), it’s simply astounding.

Apart from this, there are numerous other aspects that make the movie delightful as well. Being raised near New York City, I have a special attachment to it, and my enthusiasm for the “Karate Kid” movie, which takes place in my beloved city, is long-lasting.

It’s worth noting how entertaining it is when Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio appear on screen together.

It’s no secret that we all recognize these two actors quite well. Macchio gained icon status through his ’80s/’90s films, and not to mention, he continues to breathe life into this beloved franchise. As for Chan, let’s just say he’s none other than the legendary Jackie Chan, whom we’ve been fans of for decades. We’ve cheered him on in battles, marveled at his martial arts skills, and laughed along with his excellent comedic delivery.

Put these two in the same scenes together, and I found myself belly-laughing plenty of times.

They have a unique connection that enables them to complement each other exceptionally, and observing their disagreements feels much like witnessing an intricate dance routine.

In a striking contrast, their combat techniques – one rooted in karate, the other in kung fu – are poles apart. Yet, they seem to dance like yin and yang, two contrasting forces that ebb and flow harmoniously, leading to an enhancement of Li’s fighting skills.

It’s Not The Original – But It Never Aimed To Be

Fans of a beloved movie series often approach new installments with great anticipation and a sense of caution, as if to say, “I hope this doesn’t disappoint.” This sentiment has been shared for films like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and now The Karate Kid.

However, I don’t believe that Legends ever set out to match the quality of the original. Given its title, it’s evidently trying to attract an audience with the promise of iconic figures from the series (Macchio and Chan) reuniting to mentor a youngster. That idea is certainly intriguing in itself.

Instead of attempting to surpass the initial movie, this film manages to establish its own identity effectively, avoiding the pitfall many sequels face where they strive to outshine the original, often leading to a decline in quality for the series.

Previous movies in this genre have often fallen short, but this one stood out as it clearly defined itself – a light-hearted family movie boasting excellent acting from the leads and thrilling action sequences. Unlike its predecessor, it didn’t aim for profound philosophy; instead, it focused on being unique and original.

This Is A Film For A New Generation That Passes The Miyagi Legacy On

I find that one of the things I enjoy most about “Legends” is that it seems less focused on long-time fans of the Karate Kid series. Although it is connected, this version of The Karate Kid appears to be tailored for today’s generation – serving as an introduction to the realm of Mr. Miyagi for younger audiences.

People might argue, ‘Why remake the original when we already have it?’ But here’s the explanation – occasionally, children or new audiences may not fully grasp the original version, so these new movies provide an opportunity for them to enjoy and understand it better.

From my personal perspective, I didn’t develop an affection for this particular franchise as a child due to watching the initial movies. Instead, it was the new film featuring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, which my father took me to see, that sparked my interest. The fight scenes in this movie particularly captivated me. It wasn’t until later that I decided to explore the original films. As a child, we are more inclined towards novelty and excitement, preferring the latest and trendiest offerings over older content.

If the more recent content is quite appealing, it might even spark your interest in the older films as well. In fact, this is exactly what transpired in my case. Now, I’m deeply engrossed in the series. Admittedly, I don’t find the 2010 movie particularly impressive today – but since it was released during my childhood, it played a significant role in introducing my generation to the series and fostering a whole new wave of fans who revisited the earlier movies.

This film serves a dual purpose: it’s intended for Generation Alpha, following in the footsteps of Mr. Miyagi, and it aims to captivate a new generation of fans. By introducing them to this world, we hope they’ll be intrigued enough to explore its history, ensuring the cycle of interest persists, endlessly repeating.

This film serves as an excellent starting point for the series. However, it may not be as complex as some might expect. Yet, it delivers all the key scenes and style that one would associate with a Karate Kid film. If you enjoy the fight sequences in Cobra Kai, or the emotional turmoil resulting from a fight injury, or action movies in general, then this movie is tailored for your taste.

If a child new to this series asks about previous films after watching it, that means Karate Kid: Legends has effectively introduced the backstory. And that’s what truly counts.

Maybe it’s high time we rewatch another series of the “Karate Kid”! Who’s ready? I could use mastering that signature move – without ending up with a broken leg, of course!
