XDefiant Producer Mark Rubin Announces Retirement From Gaming Industry

As a devoted admirer, I must share the news that, following the closure of servers for Ubisoft’s intense shooter, XDefiant, Mark Rubin – the game’s executive producer and a seasoned 20-year industry veteran – has decided to bid farewell to the gaming world. As reported by Insider Gaming, he expressed his decision in a heartfelt post on social media platform X.

A significant portion of the post discusses the closure of the servers for XDefiant. However, Rubin has also mentioned that he plans to depart from the gaming industry altogether. In simpler terms, Rubin expressed that he will be taking a step back from the industry and dedicating more time to his family, implying that you won’t see him involved in creating another game.

I’m deeply committed to the gaming industry and wish someone could continue the work I started, creating games that prioritize their players, show them respect, and take their feedback seriously. A big thank you once more to all of you who showed such enthusiasm for XDefiant.

Elsewhere in his post, Rubin discussed the initial triumph that game XDefiant experienced upon its release last year. He highlighted that the title attracted a significant number of players, despite receiving minimal marketing efforts. As per him, XDefiant boasted the quickest accumulation of players during its first few weeks compared to any other Ubisoft game launched previously.

As a gamer, I can’t help but share an incredible experience – word-of-mouth and promotions among us gamers skyrocketed player acquisition for this Ubisoft title at an unprecedented pace within the first few weeks. However, without substantial marketing efforts, particularly post-launch, we unfortunately weren’t able to attract new players beyond the initial release.

One reason why XDefiant experienced a decline in players and eventually had its servers closed, according to Rubin, was due to several factors. Firstly, the developers accumulated significant technical debt over time because they utilized an engine that wasn’t primarily designed for high-speed competitive multiplayer shooter games. Secondly, the game’s netcode struggled as a result of this same engine limitation, as it had difficulty managing players with inconsistent internet connections effectively.

He expressed his viewpoint as well, stating, “I believe we left a significant mark in the gaming world.” He noticed many other games adopting our strategies, which he found very significant. He regretted that we weren’t able to sustain and further develop the game for an extended period.

In May, Rubin suggested that game development strategies should resemble those of Larian Studios, rather than Activision’s approach. He advocated for a shift away from tactics centered around “FOMO (fear of missing out) marketing and EOMM (engagement-optimised matches)” towards creating games with a more player-focused design philosophy.

The game known as XDefiant was closed following its last season, which commenced in December. Throughout this season, three fresh factions and 13 brand-new maps were introduced within the game. For additional information on these updates, feel free to explore our coverage.
