Donnie Yen is one of the most highly regarded martial arts actors currently active, and his influence extends to some timeless franchises, as well as a few less successful series. As a kung fu star who is often recognized as the main character in the Ip Man series, this was merely a glimpse into Yen’s illustrious career. Starting with the iconic Drunken Tai Chi in 1984, Yen has been a key figure in martial arts cinema for the past four decades.

Among Yen’s classic kung fu films from the past and modern action blockbusters, this Hong Kong actor has consistently provided breathtaking fight sequences and captivating performances in timeless masterpieces and cult favorites. Given the numerous series he’s associated with, it’s understandable that some are superior to others. Nevertheless, the top-tier Yen franchises rank among his finest work.

6. Iceman (2014 – 2018)

Despite being a renowned martial arts star and one of the greats of modern times, Donnie Yen has had his share of missteps. One clear example is the Iceman franchise, a modern remake of the 1989 film The Iceman Cometh. Unfortunately, this adaptation stumbled on multiple levels. The plot was convoluted, the shifts in tone were perplexing, and the special effects fell short of expectations. Even with Yen’s presence, it couldn’t prevent the film from becoming a total disappointment. Although the concept of an imperial guard who had been frozen for 400 years held great promise, the final product was at best only lukewarm.

It’s quite unexpected that a movie like Iceman, which didn’t resonate well with viewers and critics alike, would get a sequel. The second installment, Iceman: The Time Traveler, came out in 2018. Some might have seen this as an opportunity to rectify the franchise’s issues, but unfortunately, the results were even more disappointing. This sequel seemed to recycle many of the same problems that plagued the original film. Despite Yen being associated with some fantastic franchises in the past, Iceman was a clear misstep for them.

5. New Kung Fu Cult Master (2022)

In terms of visual appeal, the “New Kung Fu Cult Master” films were nothing short of breathtaking. However, compared to Yen’s other successful franchises, they didn’t quite capture the same level of interest. Despite being heavily promoted as a key feature, Yen’s role was actually quite limited in this two-part series. He made a special appearance only in “New Kung Fu Cult Master 1”, and unfortunately, he was not present in “New Kung Fu Cult Master 2” at all.

These movies faced significant challenges while attempting to bring Louis Cha’s novel “Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber” to life, often being compared unfavorably to the 1993 Jet Li film known as “Kung Fu Cult Master.” Regrettably, the end product failed to meet expectations, leaving one with the impression that Yen’s participation may have been excessively emphasized in an attempt to attract viewers who might not have considered watching the films otherwise.

4. The Twins Effect (2003 – 2004)

In the “Vampire Effect” movies, Donnie Yen played a significant role. Initially, he was a co-director for the first film and later starred in the sequel. Originally titled “The Twins Effect“, it was released as “Vampire Effect” in the US. This comedy horror movie combined martial arts with supernatural elements, creating a campy adventure filled with B-movie charm. Essentially, “The Twins Effect” felt like an extended installment of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, but with a unique Hong Kong flavor.

In the sequel titled “The Twins Effect II“, there’s an impressive lineup of famous faces, including Yen and Jackie Chan, who were part of a tale entirely disconnected from the original movie. This film tells the tale of a simple boy on a legendary voyage to reclaim his throne in a mystical realm. Despite being a sweeping adventure of spiritual enlightenment, the production values, particularly the special effects, left much to be desired. Although there’s plenty to appreciate about this series, it didn’t quite reach the same level of excellence as Yen’s top-tier productions.

3. Iron Monkey (1993 – 1996)

The Iron Monkey series suffers a deduction for inconsistency. Although both films feature Donnie Yen, they are largely unconnected and he portrayed distinct characters in each film. The original Iron Monkey was a pivotal milestone in Yen’s career, marking his transition from primarily supporting roles to leading roles. In the first Iron Monkey, director Yuen Woo-ping combined exceptional fight scenes with a wuxia style, depicting the story of the Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hung and his father, Wong Kei-ying’s encounter with the masked martial artist known as the Iron Monkey.

In the second installment, titled “Iron Monkey 2“, Yen stepped into the role he had previously battled against – that of the Iron Monkey himself. Regrettably, “Iron Monkey 2” fell short of matching the esteemed reputation of its predecessor and was perceived as a lackluster sequel attempting to capitalize on its title. Although the original “Iron Monkey” is a cherished cult film and one of Yen’s most successful productions, viewers might want to reserve their expectations for diehard fans if they choose to watch the sequel.

2. Tiger Cage (1988 – 1991)

Tiger Cage” showcased Donnie Yen’s exceptional talent for combining high-speed action with breathtaking fight sequences back in the 80s. It was a gripping portrayal of corruption and underhandedness, where Yen portrayed Inspector Michael Huang, an officer who exposed a conspiracy linking Hong Kong police and an American drug trafficking syndicate. Notably, one of Yen’s top films from the 1980s, it was only fitting that he reprised his role for the sequel, titled “Tiger Cage 2“, in 1990.

In Tiger Cage 2, the thrilling kung fu sequences that made the first one so popular were continued, but it presented a completely fresh narrative. Here, Yen portrayed Dragon Yau, a hot-headed ex-cop who’s no stranger to trouble at work and with his family. This new tale of police corruption further cemented Tiger Cage 2 as one of Yen’s top franchise films. However, despite the production of a third movie in the series in 1991, Yen did not reprise his role in Tiger Cage 3.

1. Ip Man (2008 – Present)

2 Main Films And 1 Spin-Off

Even though Donnie Yen was already a martial arts movie icon for several decades, he achieved his most significant role as the protagonist in the Ip Man series. This high-energy franchise portrayed a semi-fictionalized version of the life story of this Wing Chun master, demonstrating how this skilled fighter battled obstacles and rose to become one of the most influential martial arts instructors ever. As the trainer of Bruce Lee, viewers witnessed Ip Man’s journey from humble beginnings to challenging captivating adversaries, such as Sammo Hung, Mike Tyson, and Scott Adkins.

The Ip Man film franchise has been a massive hit for Yen, as it skillfully combines historical detail with heartfelt storytelling. Ip Man’s tale was one of personal hardship, determination, and continuous development, and when combined with some of the most impressive fight scenes ever seen in modern cinema, it created a series cherished globally. Although Ip Man 4: The Finale was advertised as the concluding chapter, it appears that we haven’t yet witnessed the end of Donnie Yen’s portrayal of this Wing Chun master (via Inverse), as Ip Man 5 is in production.
