In the production of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, the team needed to establish a familial bond swiftly. Fortunately, lead actor Joseph Quinn had previously left an indelible mark on director Matt Shakman during their first collaboration – a guardsman role in Season 7’s “The Spoils of War” episode of “Game of Thrones“, which Shakman himself directed. During this encounter, Quinn and Maisie Williams shared the screen as Arya Stark returned to Winterfell. Recently, they discussed their initial working relationship in an interview with “Empire Magazine“, revealing how it paved the way for a closer bond in “First Steps“. Despite having only one line, Shakman was “impressed” by Quinn’s performance.
In “The Spoils of War,” Quinn portrayed the character Koner as a guard, and when Arya, who was thought to be dead for several years, approached the gate, he said something rude, which roughly translated to “go away.” In an interview for Empire magazine, Quinn described his reaction as a “cough and spit.” However, Shakman felt that Quinn’s abilities were undervalued and decided not to accept this downplaying of his talent.
The director expressed admiration, stating, “He left a strong impression on me, and I found myself thinking, ‘I hope to collaborate with him again someday.'” Regarding Johnny Storm, he sought a portrayal beyond the stereotype of a ladies’ man and thrill-seeker. Instead, he desired an actor who could embody the role of a dreamer. In his opinion, Joe fits that bill perfectly, as he is vibrant, lively, and spontaneous.
Although Quinn only had one line in Game of Thrones, the scene was pivotal and required a skilled actor like Shakman recognized. For years, he remained interested in Quinn because of this performance, which stands out even among critics of the show. Arya’s homecoming was a significant moment that left a lasting impression, and it remains fondly remembered to this day. With his gruff dismissal followed by shock at his own mistake, Quinn effectively portrayed the people of the North.
Currently, many fans might not recall that Quinn had a part on “Game of Thrones”, as his more recent, prominent roles have overshadowed it. He is widely recognized for his portrayal of Eddie Munson on “Stranger Things”, and last year he featured in two significant films: “A Quiet Place: Day One” and “Gladiator II”. At 30 years old, Quinn seems poised to take on a substantial role in the MCU, similar to Johnny Storm (The Human Torch).
In previous “Fantastic Four” films on the big screen, Johnny Storm, portrayed by Chris Evans, may have come across as just cocky and headstrong, similar to his comic book character. However, over time, his personality has evolved with more complexity being brought out. It’s intriguing that both Quinn and Shakman plan to further develop this character in the upcoming movie, hinting at a potentially significant part for him in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25th in the U.S.
