Ever since sharing ownership of the EVO fighting game tournament, Sony has been deeply involved in developing or promoting games like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, which are brawlers. They almost always co-market these titles upon release, making them a significant player in this particular genre, effectively setting the standard for games within it.
Apart from possibly PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale for the PS3 and PS Vita, Sony hasn’t had many games that could truly be considered its own fighting titles. However, as revealed by Reed Baird of PS XDev, this was a key factor in their decision to collaborate with Arc System Works to create Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
Being a die-hard fan, I found myself asking ‘Where are we missing out?’ when it comes to this project. The spark for my work here was born from that deep-seated passion.
Sony (PlayStation) proposed the concept of a tag-team fighting game to Marvel Games, who showed interest after the triumph of Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, they required a developer, so they reached out to Arc System Works, known for developing Dragon Ball FighterZ. As soon as Marvel Games learned about Arc System Works’ involvement, they were fully supportive of the project.
discovering the intricacies behind this project is truly captivating. It’s clear that Sony and Marvel share a very robust partnership today, but adding Arc System Works to the mix significantly amplifies this into a formidable team-up.
It’s quite intriguing to discover that Sony’s PlayStation had been pondering the concept of their own fighting game for quite some time. Interestingly, we often imagined Arc System Works would be a perfect match for any PlayStation hero fighter, but it appears this superhero amalgamation has broader commercial potential.
Another interesting point to note is that it’s quite entertaining to see that Sony managed to excite everyone with the announcement of a live service game, simply by venturing into game genres other than the overcrowded online shooting genre.
