No, Nioh 3 Isn’t Open World, Despite Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin Experiment

At the recent State of Play event, there was an unexpected reveal about Nioh 3. The curiosity among fans who are aware of Team Ninja’s work is naturally piqued: could this new installment potentially offer an open-world experience?

Having dipped my toes into the genre just a year ago with Rise of the Ronin, this Japanese developer is now unleashing another game. This semi-historical adventure offers an expansive world, ripe for exploration – but only if I’ve got the mettle to survive in its harsh terrain.

Contrary to speculation, Nioh 3 won’t be an open-world game. Instead, it’s described as having “open field” areas, which means there will be room for some exploration, but the focus remains on the intense combat gameplay that Nioh is renowned for.

General Producer Fumihiko Yasuda states that if we were to make the map less concentrated to represent a broad, open-world environment, it wouldn’t resemble Nioh 3 anymore.

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming sequel that’s veering away from the traditional level structure of past games, but it assures us of the challenging, “die-and-retry” gameplay that the series is renowned for. The twist here is that the locations will now feel more interconnected than they did before, making the gaming experience even more immersive and engaging.

In case you haven’t heard, there’s currently a demo for Nioh 3 available on PS5. Unfortunately, this demo doesn’t fully demonstrate the ‘open field’ structure we discuss in our article, but it does offer an extensive introduction to the RPG’s fighting system instead.

Are you eagerly anticipating Nioh 3? If given the choice, would a sprawling open world have appealed to you for this sequel? I’m curious to know what everyone thinks about how Team Ninja keeps producing numerous games. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
