Tom Hiddleston Thought Loki Series Finale “Was the End” for Him in the MCU Before Avengers: Doomsday

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Hiddleston thought his journey had concluded when he put aside his horned crown in Loki. The Disney+ series wrapped up in 2023, with Hiddleston’s trickster deity, Loki, successfully destroying the Temporal Loom that shaped raw time into tangible timelines. With the branches of time multiplying and expanding into an ever-growing multiverse, the complex finale saw Loki, laden with a noble mission, ascending his throne at the End of Time to oversee the timelines he had intertwined into the branches of the cosmic tree Yggdrasil.

It appeared as though Loki’s tale was concluded, but Marvel Studios surprised us with a revelation – Loki will make his comeback in the film, Avengers: Doomsday.

In a recent chat on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, related to his new project ‘The Life of Chuck’, Hiddleston expressed how delightful it is to finally confirm, ‘Yes, I am part of this film.’

He continued, ‘I honestly didn’t realize that before. What I believed at the time was that it was indeed the conclusion.’ He assured them, ‘I wasn’t deceiving you; I swear by it. At that moment, I simply didn’t know the plan.’

As a dedicated fan, I can’t reveal the specifics of how Loki makes his comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe following his self-sacrifice in the final episode of “Loki,” but let me tell you that Tom Hiddleston showed genuine excitement when asked about his role in “Doomsday.” In “Loki,” He Who Remains hinted at a catastrophic war should the Temporal Loom be destroyed, a conflict that could potentially wipe out everything, including the Sacred Timeline. This sets up a multiversal clash in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.

He playfully hinted that he knows a thing or two. He acknowledged the rare privilege of being part of the team, implying there are yet more tales to share. It seems to him that his character has evolved alongside his personal growth, and he genuinely cherishes this ongoing experience within the group.

Tom Hiddleston has not featured in the movie side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”. This film laid the groundwork for the “Loki” series by allowing a variant from the 2012 timeline to escape an alternate reality. It was this variant who eventually ascended to become the God of Stories at the End of Time, following the demise of his counterpart – the very Loki who unknowingly brought together the Avengers – at the hands of Thanos in the 2018 film “Avengers: Infinity War”.

2023 saw Hiddleston refer to the final episode of the Loki series, named “Glorious Purpose,” as a fitting conclusion that mirrors the narrative arc started in the very first episode with the same title.

He stated, during an interview on The Tonight Show, that “Season two has come to an end, and with it, the conclusion of both seasons one and two, as well as six films and 12 episodes spanning over 14 years of my life. I was 29 when I first joined the cast, and now I’m 42. It’s been quite a journey.”

Kevin R. Wright, one of the executive producers on Loki, also revealed that at first, the series was intended as a farewell for the character who has been causing trouble for his brother (Chris Hemsworth) ever since Thor debuted in 2011.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wright expressed that Hiddleston’s performance was indeed a farewell, a sense that was shared on set. We aimed to give our show a fitting conclusion, but this doesn’t rule out future Loki appearances or tales within the same universe. We wanted to provide a suitable ending for the show, which isn’t always possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, in the world of comic books and their history, the end of a comic series does not necessarily mean the end of the character or their stories.

If there are more tales to be spun based on our current work, and if the right directors, writers, and crew are involved, we would be thrilled to keep Tom as part of the story. I mentioned this in season one, but I truly believe that Tom will portray Loki until he becomes Richard E. Grant’s classic Loki. It’s all about doing it right, and carefully crafting those stories.

In March, during a nearly six-hour broadcast, Marvel revealed that 27 actors would be reprising their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr., who will now play the villain Doctor Doom, the confirmed cast also includes Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, and Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man.

Actors Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther, Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres/the Falcon), Tenoch Huerta Mejía (Namor the Sub-Mariner), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Mabel Cadena (Namora), Alex Livinalli (Attuma), and Channing Tatum (Remy LaBeau/Gambit) will be joining forces with a group of Marvel characters, including Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova/Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr/Ghost), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent), and Lewis Pullman (Bob Reynolds/Sentry) as part of the Thunderbolts team.

In the upcoming Marvel series, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” it has been confirmed that Pedro Pascal will reprise his role as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, while Vanessa Kirby will continue as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman. Joseph Quinn is set to return as Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/the Thing. Additionally, former “X-Men” franchise stars Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) are set to make appearances, along with Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.

The movie “Avengers: Doomsday” is planned for a theater release on December 18, 2026, and then “Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow suit on December 17, 2027.
