The fight against Nightreign’s Augur in Elden Ring feels akin to a raid from an MMORPG rather than the typical boss fights found in Elden Ring. Unlike most bosses, Augur has less direct involvement but maintains almost absolute control over the battlefield. Success in this encounter hinges more on strategic positioning, precise timing of ultimate abilities, and combining the optimal character classes, as opposed to other battles where reflexes might be more crucial.
In simpler terms, our Elden Ring guide on Nightreign Augur explains the details of its attacks, strategies to dodge or counter those attacks, the vulnerabilities of this creature, and the most effective team combinations for defeating it.

Augur attacks and counters
As a dedicated fan, I find myself squaring off against The Augur in battle, and while it may seem straightforward at first with just three primary attack types, the way it cleverly combines these moves can make evasion feel like a risky dance. In its second phase, The Augur becomes more aggressive, unleashing wave attacks more frequently, constantly spawning jellyfish, and creating explosive eggs that can decimate my party if not handled promptly. Its speed also increases, which might not be an issue for ranged combatants like myself, but melee characters could certainly find themselves in a bind.
Jellyfish
- Augur produces a cluster of jellyfish-like blobs that follow you around and explode after a few seconds
- Stay on the move, and dodge away when the blobs start to explode
Tentacle spawn
- Augur raises tentacles out of the ground across the arena, and these will slam into you if you get too close
- Dodge forward or sideways to avoid the tentacle slam
Wave attack
- Augur uses the length of its body to send a wave of water toward you
- Keep your distance from the boss so you have more time to dodge. When the wave approaches, dodge into it. Dodging backwards puts you in its path, and sideways rolls sometimes still get you caught
Exploding sleep egg
- Augur only uses this after its HP drops below the halfway mark. While flying and creating regular jellyfish bubbles, Augur will randomly spawn a larger, shining bubble.
- Attack it as soon as you can. If it touches the ground, it explodes, dealing damage and causing sleep buildup
Spinning wave attack
- Augur dives forward and rotates its body, sending a larger wave of damaging water toward you
- Same as with the regular wave attack
Sleep wave
- Augur stops flying and remains in one place, building sleep energy across the entire arena. If it continues uninterrupted, your sleep meter maxes out, you take damage, and you remain immobilized for several seconds while Augur follows up with wave attacks
- When Augur stops moving, rush toward it and attack in unison. Use ultimate arts if they’re available
How to counter sleep in Augur boss fight
In Nightreign, an intriguing aspect of sleep comes into play, although I use “intriguing” to describe something that could be disastrous instead. It seems there’s no way to oppose sleep, or at least we haven’t found a method yet. The only means to fend off Augur’s wave of sleep is by acting swiftly and aggressively, striking them before the party has time to fall asleep and sustain damage.
How to beat Augur as a melee character
Fighting against Augur as a melee character isn’t straightforward; it requires precision and patience. To inflict significant damage, aim for his tentacles instead of the main body. After Augur launches his wave attacks, there’s a short window where you can attack without retaliation. If you’re not equipped with ranged weapons or lack patience, this might not be the best fight for you as a melee character.
Augur weaknesses
The creature named Augur is susceptible to lightning attacks, according to the information provided before an expedition begins. This appears to be its main weakness. It might also be vulnerable to other status ailments, but since most damage you inflict is from ranged weapons that typically don’t cause these types of ailments, it can be hard to determine. Your best strategy is likely to use your strongest weapon and aim for as many hits as you can, disregarding the affinity.
Best team combinations for Augur
- Three Ironeyes
- Two Ironeyes and one Recluse
- Two Ironeyes and one Raider or Wylder
- One Ironeye, one Recluse, and one Raider or Wylder
In most melee combat situations, Augur tends to keep his distance, making it challenging for Wylders, Guardians, Raiders, and Executors. While these classes can swiftly counter Augur’s sleep wave attack and inflict minor damage by defeating tentacles, this battle primarily favors ranged characters. Therefore, having Ironeyes or a combination of Ironeyes and Recluses would be the ideal setup for this encounter.
In some instances, The Revenant proves handy due to her ability to swiftly deal with Augur’s tentacles using her summoned spirits. Yet, if you haven’t tailored her for magic and lack crystal shards or a powerful bow, her contributions in this fight are rather limited.
