Black Myth: Wukong is coming to Xbox exactly one year after launching on PlayStation

Exactly one year from now since Black Myth: Wukong debuted on Windows PC and PlayStation 5, it’s set to release for Xbox Series X|S on August 20, 2025. I can’t help but think that timing feels a bit too conveniently planned.

There has been a lot of debate and counter-argument over the precise phrasing used by Microsoft and how it was interpreted by developers. Yet, the overall picture remained unclear or hard to understand.

From June 2024, Microsoft expressed their enthusiasm for Black Myth Wukong‘s release on Xbox Series X|S. They are collaborating with Game Science to bring this game onto their platforms. Regarding agreements between partners and other platform holders, they choose not to comment. However, their primary goal is to make Xbox the premier gaming platform, with top-tier games serving as the cornerstone of that ambition.

A few months have passed since the developer first mentioned they were developing the Xbox Series X|S version, but recently, Game Science’s game director Feng Ji stated that the optimization process for the Series S could take “several years.” This seems incongruous.

In January, Phil Spencer confirmed he was aware that Black Myth: Wukong would be released at some point, but didn’t provide additional details. To add credibility to rumors of an exclusivity agreement, both Forbes and IGN had reliable sources that suggested a deal existed between the developers and Sony.

It’s clear that we don’t have definitive solutions, but we do possess numerous reports and evidence claiming something, while the developer insisted it wasn’t so. The timing of the game’s launch on Xbox, which is just a year after its release on PlayStation, doesn’t help instill trust in the developers’ claims in this particular instance.

Additionally, I’m curious as to why Xbox chose to reveal this announcement at 9:00 PM CST on an ordinary Thursday night, prior to Summer Games Fest and their own event on Sunday. Was there a specific deadline for the announcement, or was it simply a strategic decision?
