Nioh 3 Developer Does Not Like Calling it an “Open World” Game

Following the debut of Nioh 3 during this week’s State of Play event, Team Ninja has disclosed some details regarding its fresh features. However, they prefer not to label Nioh 3 as an “open-world” game. In a recent interview with 4Gamer (translation courtesy of Automaton), lead producer Fumihiko Yasuda and producer Kohei Shibata explained that the term “open field game” is more fitting for Nioh 3.

In a departure from its predecessors, Yasuda discussed the rationale behind opting for a more interconnected structure in Nioh 3 rather than a level-based one. The developers at Team Ninja aim to create an immersive and expansive Nioh experience, allowing players greater freedom during exploration. Yasuda stated that if they were to lessen the map’s detail to capture the grandeur of an open world, it would no longer be Nioh 3. He further emphasized that when creating Nioh 3, the gameplay density and craftsmanship are indispensable.

In contrast to how open-world games are typically defined by their world’s size, Yasuda focused on the richness of the game map in Nioh 3, which will be composed of interconnected fields rather than a vast single world. He also explained that much of this map’s complexity arises from areas laden with formidable Oni, serving as challenging battlegrounds for players. These regions are known as “high-risk, high-reward zones.

Instead, Shibata explained the basic gameplay pattern for Nioh 3. He stated that players will frequently traverse expansive fields only to encounter the perilous Oni without intending to do so. Moreover, he added that the exploration would be done on foot since there are no mounts or vehicles available to navigate the game’s world.

Nioh 3 is being developed right now for both PC and PlayStation 5 (PS5), with an anticipated release in early 2026. At present, there’s an alpha demo accessible to PS5 users without charge. The developers have specified that this demo will only be available until June 18th. This demo not only offers players a sneak peek into the gameplay experience but also showcases how smoothly Nioh 3 will run on the more advanced PlayStation 5 Pro hardware, taking advantage of its PSSR support.

Among its unique “open field” layout, a notable highlight for Nioh 3 is the introduction of the new Ninja Playstyle. This playstyle, interchangeable with Samurai Style at any moment during gameplay, emphasizes swift maneuvers and agile evasion. The Ninja Playstyle will also grant players abilities akin to Ninjutsu, such as the Mist technique that generates a decoy. In contrast, Samurai Style prioritizes parrying attacks and dealing greater damage.

The Nioh series has demonstrated remarkable success for developer Team Ninja and publisher Koei Tecmo. Back in May, the founder and CEO of Koei Tecmo, Yoichi Erikawa, disclosed that the Nioh franchise had nearly sold 8 million copies across various platforms. Both Nioh and Nioh 2 can be found on PC, PS4, and PS5. These titles are also available individually or together as part of The Nioh Collection. For more information, feel free to read our review.
