It’s not unusual for Stephen King’s numerous writings to be adapted for the screen, and this time around, we can look forward to a fresh television series inspired by one of his books titled “The Institute,” which is being developed by MGM+.
Not only do we get a glimpse into the upcoming sci-fi, but we’ve also got a confirmed launch date for the eight-episode series.
On July 13th, you’ll find the new series premiering on MGM, featuring Joe Freeman, son of The Responder’s Martin Freeman, stepping into his debut leading role as the brilliant teenager, Luke Ellis.
Luke finds himself stirring to consciousness at The Institute, a place teeming with kids, much like him, who arrived in similar fashion and possess extraordinary talents.
A stone’s throw away, ex-policeman Tim Jamieson, who is now haunted by his past (played by Ben Barnes), seeks tranquility in a new town. Regrettably, the serenity won’t endure; inevitably, his narrative and Luke’s will intersect.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement knowing that the mastermind behind it all, Stephen King, is personally overseeing the production of this series. And with Jack Bender, who brought us “From,” at the helm too, I can’t help but sense we’re in for an unforgettable rollercoaster ride of suspense and thrills.
Besides Freeman, the cast of The Institute also features Ben Barnes, recognized for his performances in Shadow and Bone, Westworld, and the Chronicles of Narnia movie series.
Besides Mary-Louise Parker, the lineup also features Simone Miller, Fionn Laird, Hannah Galway, Julian Richings, Robert Joy, and Martin Roach in this production.
Bender, famed for his contributions to hit series such as The Sopranos, Lost, and Game of Thrones, is also taking up directorial duties.
From the initial glimpses of the series, it’s evident that an unsettling atmosphere pervades the entire production. In one image, Luke appears restrained in a chair, wearing headphones and seemingly observing projections on the walls of a minimalist, white chamber.
In other scenes, Barnes can be seen assuming the role of Jamieson, appearing quite grave before entering a structure. What business or situation might he be encountering there?
