In a fresh comedy series for Apple TV+ titled “Stick“, Owen Wilson gets another opportunity to revive the charm from one of his most celebrated films and rework one that didn’t get enough recognition. Over the past three decades, Owen Wilson has carved out a niche for himself as a comedy legend, with his best movies solidifying this reputation. Although he’s taken on some dramatic roles, like Agent Mobius in Loki, he’s been a dominant force in comedy since the early 90s. From timeless classics such as Zoolander and Wedding Crashers to Wes Anderson films like The Darjeeling Limited and Bottle Rocket, Wilson has been an unstoppable powerhouse in the genre.
Currently, Owen Wilson’s fresh golf comedy series titled “Stick” presents an opportunity for him to modernize certain aspects of his acting portfolio. In this series, Wilson plays Pryce Cahill, a previous professional golfer who takes on the role of mentor to a promising young prodigy. Despite the initial Rotten Tomatoes rating being modest, “Stick” has already been likened to “Ted Lasso”, both in terms of humor and for its uplifting, heartwarming narrative. By the conclusion of episode 3, the show is off to a strong start, potentially reshaping some aspects of Wilson’s career trajectory.
Stick Is Owen Wilson’s First Sports Comedy Since The Cars Franchise
Lightning McQueen Is Still One Of Wilson’s Most Famous Characters, But Stick Gives Him A Chance To Do A Sports Comedy In Live-Action
The movie titled “Stick” marks Owen Wilson’s first comedy centered on sports since he lent his voice to the character of Lightning McQueen in the popular “Cars” series, a role that has become one of Wilson’s most memorable. In essence, “Stick” is placing him back into a genre where he has already shown exceptional talent. Although it’s unlikely that “Stick” will outshine “Cars”, it’s delightful to witness Wilson revisit this genre in live-action. Both stories share some commonalities, for instance, in “Stick”, Pryce is a former pro guiding a young prodigy, much like Lightning McQueen teaching Cruz to race in “Cars 3”.
The toy named “Stick” might excel beyond “Cars” when it comes to sports-themed content. While the world of racing is central to Cars and its associated sport, it didn’t delve into sports until the third installment. In contrast, the original Cars focused more on Radiator Springs than McQueen’s competitive career, and Cars 2 was a spy thriller rather than a sports movie. Essentially, Stick offers a greater potential for leaning into the sports aspect of a comedy in a manner that Cars has only just started to explore. With discussions around golf fundamentals and thoughtful lines about the essence of the sport already present, Stick currently leads Cars in this particular area.
Stick Is Also The First Time Owen Wilson Has Done A Road Trip Comedy Since Father Figures
Father Figures Is One Of Wilson’s Lowest-Rated Movies, & Stick Is Another Chance To Do The Road Trip Trope Right
As a movie buff, I found myself captivated by the journey of Pryce, Santi, and their gang, traversing various golf courses in Mittsy’s RV (Marc Maron’s). This setup alone transformed “Stick” into a hilarious road trip comedy, marking Owen Wilson’s return to this genre since his 2017 film, “Father Figures.” Contrasting it with the animated movie “Cars,” “Father Figures” was unfortunately overlooked. With a disappointing 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s hard to believe that “Father Figures” didn’t live up to its potential. Despite this, it remains one of Wilson’s lowest-rated films, with only six other movies scoring lower on the review aggregator.

In the case of Stick, being a new road trip comedy for Owen Wilson, it offers a prime opportunity for him to outdo the reception of Father Figures. Given its advantages such as Wilson’s leading role and extended runtime, Stick has the potential to excel in the road trip subgenre where Father Figures fell short.
