Among the most eagerly awaited movies of this year is Guillermo del Toro’s take on Frankenstein. Enthusiasts of the Academy Award-winning director are sure to be even more thrilled about its release following the recent update. Del Toro’s version of the timeless tale has been officially given an R rating by the film ratings board. According to Film Ratings, this is due to “intense violence and grotesque scenes,” suggesting that del Toro has ramped up the horror and gore in the movie. This makes Frankenstein another addition to a trend seen in del Toro’s recent live-action films. Since 2015’s Crimson Peak, all of his live-action movies from the past decade have been rated R. Pacific Rim was his last live-action project to receive a PG-13 rating (the upcoming 2022 release Pinocchio, an animated film, is rated PG).
During its Tudum event in late May, Netflix debuted the first trailer for a new take on “Frankenstein.” This sneak peek offers the stunning, eerie visuals that are characteristic of Guillermo del Toro’s work, setting the stage for a tale where Oscar Isaac’s character, Victor Frankenstein, brings his monster to life. The monster is played by Jacob Elordi in this adaptation. Joining him in the cast are Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz.
Earlier, del Toro discussed his take on the movie “Frankenstein,” emphasizing that it leans heavily on the emotional aspects of the story. He mentioned, “I’m not making a horror film,” instead focusing on themes of fatherhood and sonship. Del Toro suggested that this production is one of the most personal movies he has ever created.
The movie titled “Frankenstein” will be streamable on Netflix starting November, but the specific date is still undecided. Guillermo Del Toro has verified that the film will also screen in cinemas; it remains unclear whether this release is nationwide or simply limited to major cities for award eligibility. Given Del Toro’s history with the Academy Awards, Netflix might be planning to promote “Frankenstein” more intensely.
As a die-hard Del Toro fan, I must admit I was a bit puzzled by his earlier remarks regarding Frankenstein. However, the film’s rating should put any doubts to rest concerning its content. Guessing from Del Toro’s approach, his adaptation of Mary Shelley’s timeless novel aims to be a true-to-life portrayal. Just because the director promises a heart-wrenching storyline doesn’t mean Frankenstein won’t still send shivers down our spines. The climactic scene at the end of the trailer, where the monster is seen terrorizing people on a boat, is merely a glimpse into the horrors Del Toro has prepared for us. It’ll be thrilling to witness how he manages to harmonize all story elements, keeping true to Frankenstein’s Gothic horror essence while offering a deeper reflection on the creature itself.
For quite some time now, ‘Frankenstein’ has been a cherished endeavor for del Toro, and luckily, he’s found the opportunity to bring it to life. Based on all indications, the movie is expected to be another successful collaboration between del Toro and Netflix, who earlier distributed ‘Pinocchio’ to universal acclaim and numerous awards. Working with this streaming service, del Toro was granted the artistic liberty to create the ‘Frankenstein’ adaptation he’s long aspired to make. This autumn, fans will finally get to witness this adaptation unfold on screen.
