Over the past 15 years, FromSoftware has been creating video games that have received exceptional critical acclaim, from Dark Souls and Bloodborne to Sekiro. Their consistent quality is evident in the high review scores they’ve earned. Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion followed this trend, but the latest release, Elden Ring Nightreign, has been a bit different.
At the moment, the game named Elden Ring: Nightreign has the lowest Metacritic rating among FromSoftware’s ‘Soulsborne’ series, with a score of 77 from critics. This is 19 points lower than Elden Ring itself and three points below Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. While 77 isn’t a terrible score, it represents a significant drop compared to the high scores typically received by FromSoftware games. Most criticisms aimed at Nightreign revolve around its experimental design that alters some traditional features from FromSoft games. For example, the single-player mode in Elden Ring: Nightreign is currently quite challenging. However, following its initial patch, there’s optimism for improvements in the game’s single-player experience.
Elden Ring Nightreign’s Solo Experience Has a Long Journey Ahead of It
Elden Ring Nightreign’s First Patches Are a Good Start
It’s been obvious from Elden Ring Nightreign’s promotional materials that it was primarily designed as a multiplayer cooperative game. Nevertheless, the game had a single-player mode available from the start, which players naturally expected to be functional. Regrettably, on its release day, the single-player mode turned out to be an imbalanced and challenging experience for those without exceptional Elden Ring skills, bordering on being almost impossible to play.
It’s evident that the single-player experience in Elden Ring Nightreign was perhaps not given as much focus during development, but its inclusion has sparked discussion and opportunities for improvement. Fortunately, it seems FromSoftware is actively addressing these concerns. Shortly after its release on June 2, just three days post-launch, the game received patch 1.01.1, which introduced two beneficial updates to the solo mode.
Initially, “Elden Ring Nightreign” introduced an update: the inclusion of the “Automatic Resurrection Upon Defeat” feature in its single-player mode. This function performs as described, enabling solo players to resurrect themselves once during a Night Boss encounter. Consequently, another alteration was made – the total number of Runes acquired by solo players increased significantly throughout the game. These modifications enable solo players to sustain their struggle for extended periods and improve their weaponry more efficiently, which are indeed beneficial enhancements.
What Elden Ring Nightreign Still Needs to do to Fix its Solo Experience
Although update 1.01.1 noticeably enhanced the single-player aspect of Elden Ring: Nightreign, it’s merely the start of numerous updates aimed at refining this mode. A significant flaw in the current single-player experience of Nightreign lies within its combat encounters. Most of these battles are designed for three players to engage simultaneously. As a lone player, you often face an excessive number of assailants in these skirmishes, or a colossal enemy that demands teamwork to manage their aggression.
As a gamer diving into Elden Ring Nightreign, I’ve stumbled upon an ongoing struggle – the challenging foes I face in my journey. The longer it takes me to vanquish a horde of enemies or that elusive boss, the more precious minutes I’ve squandered, and the fewer chances I get to snag fresh upgrades for my run. Future updates for this game should tackle these fundamental issues within its solo mode head-on.
