In the universe of The Arrowverse, Oliver Queen resides on an island called Lian Yu, situated in the North China Sea for five years, though he occasionally ventures to Russia and China during this period. It is here that he acquires combat skills and learns to take lives, under the tutelage of Yao Fei Gulong, a one-time Chinese military general who also finds himself on Lian Yu. The experienced Yao Fei instructs Oliver in the art of using a bow and arrow, a weapon less potent than a firearm yet possessing its own merits. Upon his return to Starling City in Arrow Season 1, Oliver embarks on a journey to rectify his father’s mistakes and adopts the bow and arrow as his distinctive tool.
Despite facing adversaries who were more powerful, Oliver persisted with his bow, opting to adapt his arrows to suit the challenging scenarios he encountered. Over the course of his journey through the Arrowverse, he demonstrated an impressive array of ingenious and effective trick arrows.
1) Grappling Hook Arrow
Even though Oliver doesn’t possess super-speed or flight, he manages to move quickly. Occasionally, he rides a motorcycle, but his preferred mode of transport is his grappling hook arrow, enabling him to traverse buildings by swinging from one to another.
2) Flashbang Arrow
In my fandom experience, even without superpowers like some of the characters I admire, Oliver often faces challenges when it comes to handling big crowds of adversaries. To keep myself from being overwhelmed, I have to rely on strategic tools that can throw them off balance – like a flashbang arrow. This arrow, when fired, creates an explosion and a blinding light, making anyone near it momentarily disoriented. In one of the earlier episodes of Arrow, Malcolm Merlyn experienced just such an incident.
3) Tranquilizer Arrow
In combat situations, arrows are indeed valuable, but they can also provide an advantage against an unaware victim. A tranquilizer arrow, for instance, can render someone unconscious instantly – just like what happened to Barry Allen when he encountered one during ‘Arrow’ Season 2.
4) Electric Arrow
In some instances when an adversary proves exceptionally tough, a regular arrow might fail to cause damage. To handle such situations effectively, Oliver invents an electrified arrow. This special arrow becomes particularly useful against foes such as the Bronze Tiger, enabling him to deliver a jolt to their system instead.
5) Boxing Glove Arrow
In the world of DC Comics, the boxing-glove arrow is undeniably a symbolic emblem, and it’s no surprise that the Arrowverse incorporates it frequently. During a battle with Ted Grant, also known as Wildcat, Oliver Queen resorts to attaching a boxing glove to one of his standard arrows, using it to incapacitate the vigilante.
6) Nanite Arrow
The catchphrase “Nanites, thanks to Ray Palmer!” originates from the nanite-infused arrow that Oliver Queen employs during combat against Eobard Thawne. This arrow momentarily incapacitates the speedster’s abilities, providing an opportunity for our hero to land some effective blows.
7) Magnetic Arrow
In every confrontation, Oliver often encounters a predicament due to his opponents’ rapid gunfire. Compared to their continuous stream of bullets, he can barely let off a few arrows. However, Felicity observes this challenge and innovates a magnetic arrow, which makes quick work of disarming weapons with ease.
8) Anti-Speedster Arrow
In the “Crisis on Earth-X” event, a malevolent Oliver emerges, stirring trouble during Iris and Barry’s wedding. This sinister character is brimming with devious schemes, one of which involves an arrow designed to hinder speedsters, causing Wally West some trouble.
9) Firework Arrow
Although the stun arrow works well, it lacks the excitement of the fireworks arrow, as its name suggests. Oliver employs this particular arrow to aid Roy, a character placed in a precarious situation by some lax police officers.
10) USB Arrow
During the “Elseworlds” crossover, Barry adopts the Green Arrow identity and swiftly takes to the role. In their battle against A.M.A.Z.O., with Oliver as the Flash, he even employs a USB-tipped arrow to infect the robot with a virus, effectively shutting it down.
11) Metaphysical Arrow
Towards the conclusion of the “Elseworlds” crossover, when all hope seems lost, Oliver employs his most potent arrow ever. The Monitor bestows upon him a mystical arrow capable of annihilating the Book of Destiny that John Deegan is manipulating to alter reality.
12) Freeze Arrow
In the live-action adaptations, Superman’s ice breath is seldom utilized, so Oliver steps up instead. In a confrontation with his sister, Emiko, he employs an arrow that freezes targets, neutralizing some of her drones in the process.
13) Enchanted Arrow
Following his transformation into the Spectre and safeguarding the multiverse, Oliver entrusts the mantle of the Arrow to his comrades, the Flash and Supergirl. Yet, when Barry encounters trouble while battling Bloodwork, the Green Arrow makes a final appearance and employs a magical arrow to halt the villain’s destruction.
14) Drug Arrow
In certain situations, some adversaries refuse to be defeated easily, requiring an exceptionally potent weapon to bring them to a halt. In an intense skirmish against Prometheus, Oliver employs a special arrow laced with a substance that, upon impact, releases a drug into the target’s face, rendering them unconscious.
15) Kryptonite Arrow
In the Arrowverse, although Oliver doesn’t employ a Kryptonite arrow himself, he acknowledges its existence, making it a viable option for this list. Being mindful of potential threats, Oliver is prepared to counteract them should Supergirl or another Kryptonian turn hostile.
The Arrowverse shows are streaming on Netflix.
