In the movie “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, it’s evident that several characters are bound to meet their end. This is because the film unfolds just before “Star Wars: A New Hope”, and many of its characters do not appear later on. Despite the fact that the story follows a group of heroes racing against time, it effectively makes them relatable, demonstrating their reasons for opposing the Empire and their readiness to risk everything. Notably, some memorable characters such as Cassian Andor and K-2SO are given more spotlight in “Star Wars: Andor”.
In the Disney+ series, it’s shown that Cassian and his robot companion cross paths on Ghorman amidst the Empire’s assault on the planet. Before joining forces, K-2SO eliminates some rebels only to end up trapped under a truck, but Cassian recognizes K-2SO’s potential value. This marks the beginning of a significant friendship that proves vital until the very climactic moments.
Cassian Andor & K-2SO Become Fast Friends
Having borne witness to the Ghorman Massacre, I, Cassian, find myself back on Yavin 4, entrusting a KX-series security droid to those who can make the most of it. The Rebellion seems to take a liking to K-2SO, allowing me to handle him as I see fit. In our next encounter within the series Andor, we’re engaged in a friendly game of cards, and K-2SO begins to suspect his companions of cheating. Unable to settle the matter beforehand, Wilmon interrupts with an urgent message from Coruscant – a distress signal that I believe may be linked to Luthen Rael. In response, I gather K-2SO and Melshi to join me in my quest to uncover the truth behind this mysterious signal.
Upon reaching their city planet, the team encounters a series of problems. The Imperial forces are chasing Kleya, a confidante of Luthen, as she possesses vital details regarding the Death Star’s blueprints. With Luthen deceased, Kleya shares everything with Cassian, but it appears their efforts will be in vain as the Imperials manage to track down their hideout and advance. However, K-2SO learns of the Imperial plan and swiftly takes action, enabling their safe escape. Eventually, everyone returns unscathed to Yavin 4, and shortly thereafter, Cassian and K-2SO embark on a new mission to connect with Tivik, who holds further insights into the Empire’s ultimate weapon.
In the opening scene of “Rogue One”, the meeting occurs, and although K-2SO remains aboard the ship, he plays a crucial role in the subsequent events throughout the film. He prevents Jyn Erso from escaping when the Rebellion searches for her, and also rescues both Jyn and Cassian during a fierce battle on Jedha. However, K-2SO’s most significant contribution happens at the end of the movie on Scarif.
K-2SO Only Has One Goal at the End of Rogue One
In the aftermath of Jedha City’s annihilation by the Death Stars, the Rebellion feels cornered and considers giving up. However, Jyn advocates for action, yet her suggestions are rejected, leaving her and her comrades with no choice but to take matters into their own hands. They journey to Scarif, a place where the blueprints for the Death Star are stored. K-2SO, Jyn, and Cassian manage to penetrate the security complex while others remain on the ground, battling. The group soon encounters obstacles, but eventually find themselves in the vault, needing only to figure out what to search for.
In a turn of events, K-2SO remains behind as the group continues their search, and eventually, some stormtroopers locate him. Trying to deceive them with his disguise, K-2SO’s plan is disrupted by a message from Cassian. Consequently, he is compelled to defend himself. For a brief while, he manages to hold his own and even damages the door controls to prevent the stormtroopers from chasing after Cassian and Jyn. However, the harm inflicted on him proves fatal, and K-2SO passes away before learning the outcome of the situation.
Watching K-2SO’s demise is tough, given his unwavering devotion to helping his comrade over obliterating the Empire. It’s evident in the “Rogue One” novelization that Cassian’s aspirations are his own, and this is underscored when the droid performs a final act by constructing a mental simulation where the one he cherishes most escapes Scarif safely.
