Is Doing Guinness World Record Stunts the New Way for Actors to Earn an EGOT?

Many actors aspire to achieve something as prestigious as earning the “EGOT” title by the year 2025, which stands for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award in their career. Coined by the star of Miami Vice, Phillip Michael Thomas, this accolade remains a coveted benchmark in the industry. Talented individuals like Tom Cruise and Florence Pugh might even strive to set a Guinness World Record by joining the exclusive club.

Indeed, the latest fuel for such speculation comes from an article in Variety, suggesting that the stunning parachute stunt in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” was the key factor in setting a new record. If you’re curious about where this new record places, it currently stands at number 16. You can witness this record-breaking feat in the video from Paramount’s Mission marketing campaign.

In terms of Florence Pugh’s involvement in this conversation, it has been established through her Harper’s Bazaar interview that she, along with her stunt double Sarah Irwin and stunt coordinator Heidi Moneymaker, hold Guinness World Records.

It turns out that the jaw-dropping feat earning this recognition was Pugh’s death-defying MCU base jump from Kuala Lumpur’s Merdeka 118 building, which at the time of Disney+ subscribers streaming May’s MCU release, is likely to continue sparking conversation among fans about Thunderbolts’ most audacious stunt.

Besides actors and their stunt doubles, others involved in the production are also aiming for Guinness World Records recognition. In my conversation with renowned James Bond special effects supervisor Chris Corbould, he confessed that the team was determined to surpass the record-breaking explosion from Spectre, resulting in an even more powerful blast seen in No Time to Die.

For as little as $10.99 per month, you can virtually bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe into your home with the Disney+/Hulu bundle! This package offers a plethora of Star Wars, Disney, and MCU titles for endless enjoyment. Additionally, Hulu’s extensive library is included, and for an extra $19.99 monthly fee, you can upgrade to an ad-free experience. While it might not offer base jumping lessons, the entertainment value is certainly breathtaking! Check out this deal now!

Looking back at stunt performers and actors, achieving a Guinness World Record could certainly enhance one’s reputation if they are determined to excel. With the Oscars introducing a new “Achievement in Stunt Design” award set for 2028, there’s a good chance that voters will be impressed by record-breaking stunts, potentially leading them to favor such achievements.

In simpler terms, it seems unlikely that you would oppose an action that earned a Guinness World Record. Just like how Tom Cruise is often associated with popcorn, such extraordinary feats are usually recognized in similar ways. And much like Tom Cruise enjoys his popcorn, I’d say that person appreciates the recognition.

If this trend indeed materializes, I suggest we change the name to “GEGOT.” This seems like the most effective rebranding idea that stands out. Of course, it’s open for further discussion and you can participate by watching both “Thunderbolts*” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which are now playing in a theater near you.
