In James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, set within a separate cinematic universe from Marvel, there is a character who shares a similarity with one from the MCU in an intriguing manner. The launch of Gunn’s new DC Universe, titled Superman, presents various heroes straight out of the comics, featuring Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner (also known as Green Lantern). Readers familiar with the original Green Lantern’s abilities will recognize that this hero derives his powers from a potent ring, enabling him to shape energy into diverse physical forms.
One of the surprising connections between him and Marvel Comics’ young superheroine, Ms. Marvel (played by Iman Vellani), lies in their shared power source. In contrast to various screen adaptations, the latest trailer for the DC Universe’s Superman showcases how Gardner’s abilities will be portrayed. The footage displays Gardner employing his ring to summon a colossal green hand that swiftly defeats his adversaries during combat.
Although Gardner’s full energy construction abilities are yet to be unveiled, it seems that the energy fist power could be a frequent option for the hero. The depiction of Fillion’s Green Lantern in Superman tie-in figures from Burger King, featuring a large green fist, suggests that this will be one of the character’s notable traits.
Some viewers might have spotted that the energy manipulation capabilities in this construction seem reminiscent of Kamala Khan’s talents as portrayed in Ms. Marvel. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kamala acquires her abilities through a pair of enchanted bracelets, which enable her to transform light into solid matter, a characteristic that sets her powers apart from those depicted in the Marvel Comics.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she employs this talent in numerous methods, transforming light structures into missiles, floating pedestals, and barriers. Ms. Marvel often relies on her light abilities to augment her body, specifically her hands, which can elongate and expand into massive fists.
In different fictional worlds, both Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) and Ms. Marvel can create a fist using light or energy, even though they don’t share the same superhero universe. Notably, these characters acquire their powers through special items they wear – for Ms. Marvel, it’s her Quantum Bands bracelet, while Green Lantern gets his power from his ring.
On July 11th, you can catch the release of Superman. In this film, David Coronswet takes on the role of Superman. Alongside him, Isabela Merced plays Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi portrays Mr. Terrific, and Fillion’s character is Gardner, completing the Justice League team.
What Other Connections Does Superman Have to the MCU?
It’s well-known that Marvel and DC have distinct comic book worlds featuring unique heroes. Yet, there are striking similarities between certain characters within each universe – for example, Quicksilver and The Flash, or Superman and Icarus from Eternals. Despite their differences, Guy Gardner and Ms. Marvel can be seen as parallel figures due to their shared powers in these two distinct universes.
In regards to the other members of the Justice Gang, viewers might notice some shared characteristics between Kendra Saunders’ Hawkgirl and Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, or between DC’s Mr. Terrific and Marvel’s Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards), if their portrayals in Superman are consistent with these characters.
A more straightforward tie between Superman and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) can be seen through the cast of actors involved in the movies. Previously a director within the MCU, James Gunn, who brought the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy to fruition, is now leading DC Studios. Nevertheless, Gunn has still managed to recruit some Marvel actors for his upcoming Superman film, meaning these stars will appear in both the Marvel and DC universes simultaneously.
