For over three decades, the Predator series has unveiled numerous iconic weapons wielded by the title extraterrestrial hunters, each boasting unique power and lethal design. The Predator series primarily revolves around a race of aliens, known as the Yautja, whose culture highly values warrior spirit and hunting prowess as supreme virtues. Though these alien hunters pursue a diverse range of species throughout the cosmos, including those from the Alien franchise, the series also explores the Yautja’s encounters with humans across various cultures and eras on Earth.
Although Predators possess a physical advantage over humans due to their larger size and strength, it is evident that humans have managed to overcome them on several occasions. This demonstrates that the Yautja culture values ingenuity above raw power, as they are renowned for creating some of the most lethal and impressive weaponry in science fiction cinema. Here’s a list of the 10 coolest Predator weapons, each with its unique capabilities:
1. Plasmacaster: A powerful plasma gun capable of firing bolts of energy that can melt through solid metal.
2. Wrist Blades: Hidden blades located on their wrist that can be extended for close combat situations.
3. Shoulder Cannon: A large, rapid-firing weapon mounted on the Predator’s shoulder, used for ranged attacks.
4. Net Gun: Fires a net to ensnare prey or objects, useful for disabling or capturing targets.
5. Combistick: A multi-functional weapon that can be used as both a spear and a knife.
6. Smart Disc: A throwing disc that can seek out and destroy its target upon impact.
7. Plasmacite Grenade: Explosive devices filled with plasmacite, capable of causing massive damage to structures or groups of enemies.
8. Self-Destruct Device: A built-in device that allows the Predator to self-destruct when cornered, taking out any nearby enemies in the process.
9. Invisibility Cloak: A cloaking device that makes the Predator nearly invisible to the naked eye, allowing them to approach prey undetected.
10. Heads-Up Display (HUD): An advanced heads-up display system that provides real-time information about their surroundings and targets.
10) The Predator Shuriken
Though it comes from an unpopular spin-off in the Predator series called “Alien vs. Predator” (2004), the Predator’s shuriken is undeniably one of the most striking and deadly weapons in its collection. This versatile tool folds into a compact circular disc for convenient carrying, and when deployed, it unfurls a lethal array of blades that work much like traditional ninja shuriken. As demonstrated in “Alien vs. Predator,” this shuriken can cut through the tough hide of a Xenomorph Queen with ease, proving that it’s no mere toy for the Predator.
9) The Predator Blade-Whip
The blade-whip, first appearing in “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” in 2007, is not something you’d find useful for an Indiana Jones-type escapade. Instead, this deadly tool is expertly handled by the film’s solitary Yautja hunter, Wolf. In the hands of a proficient Predator, the blade-whip captures and severs the limbs or even the neck of its target, effortlessly cutting through flesh, muscle, and bone. Although it demands high expertise to use effectively, a seasoned Predator like Wolf makes this weapon a formidable asset indeed.
8) The Cut Clamp
In the 2022 film Prey, the cut-clamp – one of the Predator’s cunning tools – is showcased as one of the Feral Predator’s preferred weapons. This device, much like the Predator’s blade-whip, captures an opponent by entangling a limb or head for swift beheading. The cut clamp offers an extra advantage because it can be wielded in both curled and extended forms. The Predator can stretch it out when drawing the weapon and wrap it around an object or foe with just one strong blow. Once deployed, the cutting edge of the cut-clamp is undeniably lethal.
7) The Net Gun
In the sequel “Predator 2”, the Yautja’s lethal weapon, known as the net gun, is unveiled. Contrary to popular belief, this net isn’t just for capturing foes; it’s a deadly instrument made of sharp metallic fibers and screws designed to pierce through targets. As these screws drill into a wall, they also brutally penetrate the prey, while the mesh of the net mercilessly cuts into their flesh. This gruesome process immobilizes and ultimately kills them. Unlike other Predator weapons that typically ensure swift demise, the net gun offers anything but a quick end.
6) The Self-Destruct Bomb
Among the distinctive tools carried by a Predator, their self-destruct bomb serves not only as a destructive weapon but also as a last resort during defeat or capture. This device has two main functions: firstly, it provides an honorable exit for the Predator, similar to the samurai’s haka-kiri when faced with defeat; secondly, it aims to eradicate the Predator’s killer and any other nearby life forms in the immediate vicinity. As demonstrated in both “Predator 2” and “Alien vs. Predator”, the blast radius of this self-destruct bomb is massive, capable of obliterating at least three hundred city blocks. Though it’s challenging to measure its exact power, it’s evident that the Predator’s self-destruct device ranks among the most potent weapons in their arsenal.
5) The Smart Disc
In any conflict, projectiles are crucial tools for a Predator, and in “Predator 2,” one particularly deadly weapon is introduced: the Predator’s Smart Disk. Similar to a boomerang, it flies through the air, decimating anything in its path. Unfortunately, character Peter Keyes (played by Gary Busey) experienced a very grisly demise after being hit by it. On the other hand, Detective Mike Harrigan (portrayed by Danny Glover) successfully uses the Smart Disk against his Predator adversary during their final confrontation. With its deadly power, the Smart Disk ranks among the most effective Yautja weapons ever designed.
4) The Combistick
One notable melee weapon used by the Predator first appeared in the movie ‘Predator 2’, known as the Combistick. This unique weapon essentially merges a spear with a bo staff, making it versatile against both armed enemies and fast, powerful opponents such as Xenomorphs. In battle, the pointed end of the Combistick can deliver a swift, deadly blow. Similar to the Predator’s wrist blades, the Combistick is primarily designed for one-on-one combat situations, but it proves to be highly effective in any fight.
3) The Plasma Pistol
In the movie ‘Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem’, Wolf demonstrates not only his hunting and fighting prowess but also his ability to improvise, a trait highly valued by predators. This is evident when he creates a new weapon in an instant, the Plasma Pistol. When his usual weapon, the Plasmacaster, fails, Wolf ingeniously transforms it into the Plasma Pistol. Instead of the conventional charging mechanism, this modified weapon counts down before unleashing a potent plasma blast. Although it requires a bit more time to prepare for attack, the Plasma Pistol remains one of the most impressive Predator weapons due to its battle effectiveness and the way it showcases the Yautja’s knack for creativity and resourcefulness.
2) The Wrist Blades
A Predator’s go-to melee tool is undoubtedly their sharp wrist blades, securely fastened within the gauntlet that every Yautja warrior wears on their wrists. Primarily intended for close-quarters fighting, these wrist blades are exceptionally efficient at slicing through opponents of the Predator species. While the films “Aliens vs. Predator” and “Predators” (2010) depict an additional function: they can be launched as projectiles. With such deadly potential, no Predator embarks on a hunt without their indispensable wrist blades in tow.
1) The Plasmacaster
Without a doubt, the most iconic tool in a Predator’s arsenal is the Plasmacaster, a shoulder-mounted mini-cannon they carry on every hunt. This formidable weapon of war fires plasma blasts that can effortlessly pierce through almost any target. Creatures like humans, Xenomorphs, and many others have little choice but to evade the blast or risk losing limbs vaporized from their bodies or gaping holes appearing in their chests or heads. Amongst all the impressive Predator weapons, the Plasmacaster stands out as the coolest, undeniably so.
The “Killer of Killers” Predator movie is currently available for streaming on Hulu, while the upcoming film titled “Predator: Badlands” will hit theaters on November 7th.
