Despite stiff competition from “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina”, “Lilo & Stitch” continues to thrive at the box office. The release of “Ballerina” took place during the first weekend of June, with the “John Wick” spinoff featuring Ana de Armas debuting a week after “Karate Kid: Legends” and two weeks after the Memorial Day tentpoles, namely “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and the initial release of “Lilo & Stitch”. The latter, being Disney’s live-action adaptation of their 2002 animated success, set a new record for the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut in history and has swiftly surpassed a global gross of $600 million.
As a film enthusiast, I was eagerly anticipating the opening weekend of “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” expecting it to rake in around $28 million. However, upon the break of dawn on Saturday, estimates revised downwards to a 3-day domestic gross between $25.5 million and $27.5 million, falling short of my initial expectations. Nonetheless, this strong showing is projected to secure it the second spot on the domestic chart, although it couldn’t dethrone “Lilo & Stitch,” which has held the number one position for three consecutive weekends, with a total projected earnings of $33 million.
