Ultimate Spider-Man’s Greatest Threat is Gwen Stacy

In Marvel’s latest alternate universe, the Ultimate Spider-Man series offers a fresh take on the classic Spider-Man storyline. One of the most significant transformations is the reimagining of Gwen Stacy, who now wields the Amulet of Mysterio. This shift elevates her from a mere love interest to one of the strongest and most perilous characters in the series. The Mysterio character isn’t just a single individual with simple tricks; instead, Mysterio represents a group of magic-wielding individuals who share the Amulet, all working together to undermine the changes brought about by the Maker and restore their world to its original state. Their abilities in illusion are unparalleled, but they will need these powers in the forthcoming war against the Kingpin and his remnants of the Sinister Six. However, it seems that Gwen Stacy, and Mysterio specifically, could be the greatest challenge Spider-Man must confront.

War is Coming to New York City

In issue #17 of “Ultimate Spider-Man”, Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy engage in a struggle for control of New York City against Kingpin’s troops. Once more, Harry put on the Green Goblin armor, but the artificial intelligence of Norman Osborn (disguised as his father) swiftly criticized him for his shortcomings. Throughout their fight against Mr. Negative’s men, this deceitful AI whispered in Harry’s ear, insinuating that Gwen was manipulating him and expressing a lack of faith in him. Despite Harry sharing his secret identity with Gwen right away, she only brought him into the team when it was crucial to protect his life.

Harry silenced his father’s words, yet moments later, Gwen demolished the structure harboring Demons right after Harry had evacuated the civilians. It became evident that some of Norman’s advice still resonated within him. He attempted to address Gwen about overstepping boundaries, suggesting innocent lives could have been lost due to her actions, but Mysterio dismissed his concerns, claiming she was prepared to cross any line necessary in this conflict. Witnessing his spouse so nonchalantly express her readiness to sacrifice lives made Harry uneasy, and he decided to take independent action as well.

Though Gwen dismissed him for uncovering her dual existence, Harry clandestinely retained Otto Octavius as his private scientist and tech expert. Harry financed this covertly using his hidden reserves of wealth, intent on keeping everything concealed from Gwen. After observing her harsh actions in the field, he believed he needed an accomplice to fight fairly. By the story’s conclusion, Uncle Ben assisted Harry in contacting Peter, who was urged to return home because his friend required assistance. In the final analysis, Spider-Man is joining the battle against Green Goblin, but Mysterio could prove their most significant hurdle to surmount.

Gwen Stacy Has Her Hand in Everything

Besides Gwen Stacy, Quentin Beck, and Robbie Robertson (a Daily Bugle reporter) being Mysterios, Wesley, the Kingpin’s right-hand man is also a Mysterio. To add to that, Gwen has formed an alliance with Mole Man, killed Kraven, and recently attacked Mr. Negative’s territory. This sets up Gwen Stacy perfectly to bring down the Kingpin, and possibly even take his position. Given her role as CEO of a powerful global company and her history of seeking power, she might not only be planning the Kingpin’s demise but also her rise to his throne. This could lead her one step closer to challenging the Maker himself.

Indeed, she wouldn’t achieve such a degree of authority and loyalty from the Maker’s followers unless she transgresses boundaries that should never be breached. Harry observes her limits and is apprehensive about her actions, even though he himself is bold. Spider-Man, unquestionably, won’t stand idly by as she attempts to seize power over New York City. He’s defending its liberty from oppression, not merely electing a new dictator who might be less harsh than the previous one. However, with her extensive connections and the strength and knowledge she possesses, she could prove too formidable for Spider-Man or Green Goblin. Let’s hope it never comes to that, but if it does, and it seems like it might, these two heroes will have to use all their abilities to bring down Gwen Stacy before she becomes the new ruler of New York City, akin to the Kingpin.
