Fans of the Star Wars franchise hold The Mandalorian in high regard, so they were thrilled when Unexpected Games and Asmodee introduced Mando, Grogu, and their season 1 companions to the realm of tabletop games with “The Mandalorian Adventures”. Now, this team is returning in the highly anticipated expansion “Clan of Two”, introducing beloved characters from season 2 alongside new gameplay features, four fresh maps, and numerous choices to craft your ideal Star Wars gaming experience – making it an absolute delight.
A Fearsome Roster
In the game “Clan of Two“, four fresh personalities are joining the action, which includes a few powerful figures from “Star Wars” that alter your strategy and gameplay. These new characters consist of Ahsoka, Bo-Katan Kryze, Boba Fett, and Fennec Shand. However, you’ll also have the option to include all six characters from the initial game in the expansion for a variety of combinations as desired.
The new characters are thrilling to play, and I’ll focus on Boba Fett first. He excels at inflicting damage on opponents in multiple ways. One of Fett’s unique traits allows him to violate the game’s standard rule that prevents repeating actions within a single turn. In essence, he disregards this restriction by having the capacity to launch two attacks during one turn. However, there are two minor conditions attached to this, they don’t detract much from the overall impact of being able to attack twice in one go. This feature significantly expands the gameplay possibilities when it’s his turn. Armed with a variety of weapons and tools such as his missile launcher, jetpack, and laser rifle, he can swiftly obliterate enemy forces in just a few turns.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to highlight Ahsoka as another formidable damage dealer. She’s capable of dishing out an impressive amount of harm with a single strike, but there’s a caveat – she must be close enough to her enemies because her lightsaber restricts her attacks to within her immediate vicinity. However, the advantage lies in her cards, which enable significant damage amplification when used strategically, making even the toughest opponents fall swiftly.
For those seeking to manage and alter the battlefield dynamics effectively, Fennec could be your ideal choice. With her inherent ability, you can adjust a card’s power level by 1, thereby extending its reach by 1, once per turn. This foundation is further strengthened by other cards in her deck that offer multiple attacking options at varying distances and don’t increase the action cost. Moreover, there’s one card (Life Debt) that lets you inflict 4 damage on an opponent’s threat, regardless of distance. Fennec is also proficient in moving enemies, disrupting others, dealing significant damage herself, and influencing various aspects of the battlefield, depending on the cards drawn. If you enjoy having a hand in every facet of the game, Fennec might just be the character you’ve been waiting for.
Bo-Katan Kryze stands out among the group due to her unique core mechanism. Unlike other players, she can maintain the top card of her skill deck face up, which she can leverage through various card abilities in different ways. Some cards enable you to increase the power of the card you’re playing by the value on this top card, offering a substantial boost, while others let you deploy a free attack using that card. Manipulating the skill deck is crucial as well, since some Bo-Katan cards allow you to find a powerful card within the deck or discard the top card to enhance a move action. This mechanism significantly influences almost every action and turn for whoever is controlling her character.
New Additions
As a devoted fan, I must say that the fresh characters in this expansion offer an engaging play experience due to their depth and complexity, which sets them apart from the original game’s heroes. It’s exciting to see how these new characters interact with familiar faces in the missions, creating moments that are enjoyable and satisfying.
The addition of four new maps based on iconic scenes from the show truly enhances the gaming experience. Battling Morgan Elsbeth, defending Grogu at the seeing stone, infiltrating Morak, and fighting against Gideon and his Death Troopers on the Light Cruiser are all thrilling scenarios that bring the series to life.
Among the significant new features is the introduction of Mercenary Missions, enabling players to enjoy key moments from the series independently without disrupting the overall gameplay. Notably, these missions offer a chance to engage in the epic battle against the Krayt Dragon, a formidable foe that surpasses other enemies in difficulty and has the ability to consume your characters entirely.
Besides the primary gameplay, there are other significant enhancements as well. Although they might seem minor, they can significantly influence whether your operation is a success or not. One such novelty is the Duel deck, which comes into play when facing elite adversaries. These adversaries force you to draw a card from this deck during any attack against them. The cards in this deck add extra challenges and reduce damage, making these battles feel like the intense, one-on-one encounters depicted in the series. Additionally, new cards have been included in the Event deck, some of which trigger ongoing effects when specific conditions are met on an action slot. Some of these effects can be nullified, but others remain for the duration of the mission and may further hinder your mission’s completion.
Additionally, features such as a mobile spawn (via the Star Token) and Scope Tokens are included, becoming active during specific missions. These tokens enable two characters to function as snipers, offering assistance from afar. However, these snipers remain invulnerable to enemy attacks, which means you’ll have two additional attackers but only two units will absorb all the damage. Therefore, strategic planning is essential. Furthermore, new cards have been introduced for Mando and Grogu’s decks, while an additional crucial card has been added to the Mobilize card in the Planning deck. This allows for a key move increase and makes the Planning action even more beneficial.
Final Thoughts
I really enjoy the modularity of this game, as it’s incredibly versatile, offering a plethora of new elements in an expansion-like fashion. The ability to combine and customize these elements makes the gaming experience truly extraordinary. This set introduces new Dangerous Event cards that crank up the challenge, and even without them, you can increase the enemy difficulty with the Expert enemies from the base game. Additionally, there’s the Hidden Motives mode from the original game, which adds a fresh twist, and now, with additional Mercenary Missions at your disposal, you can tailor the game to suit any group or game night situation.
Looking for a campaign-like game that stays true to the story? No problem! If you’d prefer to play as four characters who weren’t directly involved in that specific event from the show, that’s also possible. You can tailor the difficulty and other aspects according to your preference. Fans of the franchise will discover a cooperative experience with depth, while those seeking a tough challenge can increase the complexity for an intense battle. In essence, The Mandalorian Adventures – Clan of Two adapts to suit your needs at any given moment, making it incredibly versatile.
