Avengers: Doomsday to Feature Three Iconic Captain America Actors!

In the upcoming Marvel Studios blockbuster titled “Avengers: Doomsday”, there will be a group of three actors who have previously played roles connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain America character.

The final day (Doomsday) promises to be overflowing with Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) heroes and characters from previous generations of films. Notably, several individuals have taken up the Captain America mantle throughout the years, a role that has been passed down numerous times across generations since it originated as wartime propaganda in the 1940s. Many prominent actors will be involved in this endeavor.

Here are three actors from the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” who have played characters that assumed the role of Captain America throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 17-year span.

Every Captain America Actor in Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans – Steve Rogers

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Chris Evans initially portrayed the Captain America character, appearing in 11 films produced by Marvel Studios so far. Transformed physically thanks to Abraham Erskine’s super soldier serum during World War II, Steve Rogers evolved into a symbol and hero that resonated through generations. Eventually, he traveled back in time to spend the remainder of his life with Hayley Atwell’s character, Peggy Carter.

In December 2024, there were news reports that Evans was possibly cast for the film Avengers: Doomsday. However, Marvel has yet to officially verify Evans’ role in the 2026 sequel, and it remains undetermined which character he will play in his second movie within the Multiverse Saga.

Regardless of whether Chris Evans reprises his role as the original Steve Rogers, the Nomad variant of the character, or a villainous version of Captain America influenced by Hydra, it is clear that his influence on Marvel Studios will be substantial and significant when he returns to work.

Anthony Mackie – Sam Wilson

Following Chris Evans stepping down from his full-time role as Captain America in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, assumed the mantle and shield. Over the past 11 years and nine Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, Mackie’s Falcon character has evolved, and he officially adopted the title of Captain America by the end of his Disney+ series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” released in 2021.

After his notable performance in the 2025 film “Captain America: Brave New World”, which marked Chris Evans’ first solo movie, Sam Wilson will now take center stage in “Avengers: Doomsday”. The initial lineup of characters confirmed for roles by Marvel Studios in their official cast announcement in late March included Captain America among the first 27.

In the storyline of Doomsday, Sam Wilson will head a fresh band of Avengers onto the battleground. Interestingly, they’ll be squaring off against a team known as the Thunderbolts earlier, now led by Yelena Belova and Bucky Barnes. However, an unforeseen legal conflict over the “Avengers” moniker arises between these teams. Despite their disagreements, they’ll need to set aside their differences for what could be their most critical fight yet.

Wyatt Russell – John Walker

After the release of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson initially returned Steve Rogers’ shield to the government in the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This action led them to appoint a new Captain America, which was subsequently given to John Walker, played by Wyatt Russell. In contrast to his predecessor, John Walker displayed an entirely different brand of “heroism”.

In the subsequent events, following a significant public dispute and an unceremonious dismissal from the Army, Sam Wilson once again claimed the shield and permanently assumed the role of Captain America. By the conclusion of that series, Walker adopted a fresh identity as the U.S. Agent, joining forces with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in preparation for their venture in Thunderbolts*.

*Note: In this context, “collaboration” or “venture” can be used interchangeably to describe the team-up or partnership between Walker and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in Thunderbolts.

In the March 2025 live broadcast, it was revealed that Russell had been added to the cast of “Doomsday“. This solidified his role alongside his New Avengers teammates, Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, and others. Now, with a more optimistic outlook, the ex-Captain America might have an opportunity for redemption in future events.

Bonus: David Harbour – Alexei Shostakov

David Harbour’s appearance on this list as Alexei Shostakov is because his character serves as a Russian counterpart to the Star-Spangled Man with a Plan. Injected with a Russian equivalent of the super soldier serum, he was intended to be a mirror image of Steve Rogers. Interestingly, despite never crossing paths with Captain America, he developed a mental rivalry with him.

In the movies “Black Widow” and “Thunderbolts,” Harbour’s Red Guardian showcases abilities similar to Captain America, wielding his own shield in combat. After appearing in “Thunderbolts,” he joined the New Avengers and sports a distinctive branded tracksuit that serves as a team mascot. He was also announced for a role in “Avengers: Doomsday” during the live stream event, positioning him for interactions with previous Captain America characters.

Bonus: Tom Hiddleston – Loki

Despite having vastly different themes, Loki once displayed traits reminiscent of Captain America during a notable incident. This occurred in the movie “Thor: The Dark World” (2013), where Loki pretended to be Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers by casting an illusion. He even tried his best, albeit comically poor, impersonation. This act was reprised in “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) and was featured again in the premiere episode of “Loki Season 1” (2021).

As a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate Loki actor Tom Hiddleston joining the cast of “Doomsday” following his announcement during Marvel’s live stream. While speculation swirls about his potential role in the upcoming Avengers sequel given his status as the Storyteller God, the details of his character arc remain undisclosed for now.
