Why Becoming Led Zeppelin Is a Must-Watch, But There’s a Controversial Twist!

⏩ This weekend, the documentary titled “Becoming Led Zeppelin ” will be available on streaming platforms. If you haven’t caught it yet, Netflix subscribers can now enjoy it! Trust me, it’s an engaging watch, particularly for fans of the iconic band. I must admit, I’ve seen plenty of rock documentaries, and this one has quickly made its way into my list of favorites. Enjoy the show! 🎬🤘️

What this means is that while the documentary does an excellent job narrating the remarkable origin story of one of the most influential rock bands in history, it neglects to mention a crucial aspect – the blues legends who significantly influenced the band, particularly in their debut album. To clarify the matter, let’s make it clear that they drew inspiration from these blues icons.

The Interviews And Live Footage In Becoming Led Zeppelin Are Incredible

Over the years, numerous documentaries about Led Zeppelin have been produced. Among them, “Becoming Led Zeppelin” stands out due to its insightful interviews. Unique among other productions is the inclusion of extensive new interviews with all three surviving members – John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, and Jimmy Page. The most captivating aspect, however, is the heavy use of a scarcely available old interview with the band’s drummer, John Bonham. Known for his reticence with the media, Bonham’s interviews are few and far between, making this one a precious find.

Apart from the interviews, the vintage live clips of their initial successes are equally captivating. “Communication Breakdown” stands out particularly, as you can see the audience’s response to such unbridled energy and, let’s be honest, decibels. It’s mind-boggling to witness the confusion this fresh, bold form of rock caused. The footage is priceless, yet it’s not a concert documentary; instead, it focuses on their first two albums and the band’s early years.

Led Zeppelin Borrowed Heavily From The Blues

To put it mildly, Zeppelin’s early songs, particularly on their first two albums, show a strong resemblance to earlier blues tunes. However, this similarity has been a subject of controversy, with accusations that they directly copied large sections or even entire songs without giving proper credit to the original artists. On some occasions, songs that were essentially covers have been attributed solely to Zeppelin’s band members.

It’s well established that the band has faced numerous lawsuits throughout their career, leading them to credit other artists for songwriting contributions on various re-releases of their albums over the past five decades or so. This practice extends to some of their most popular tracks such as “Dazed and Confused” from their first album and “Whole Lotta Love” from Led Zeppelin II. While these songs are prominently showcased in the documentary, it doesn’t discuss the legal battles that influenced the changes to the songwriting credits on those two specific songs.

To many devoted Led Zeppelin fans, delving into the band’s history may feel like revisiting familiar terrain. However, despite some early contentious gaps in their history that have been generally accepted by both the band members and fans, these omissions are still an integral part of Led Zeppelin’s narrative, which this exceptional rock documentary brings to light.
