Why Tom Felton Thought Draco Malfoy Role in Cursed Child Was a Prank

Tom Felton was raising an eyebrow with his wand for this role.

After the actor who played Harry Potter revealed that he would portray Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, he couldn’t believe it seemed like an opportunity that was almost too perfect to pass up.

Tom shared with Keltie Knight from TopMob News at the 2025 Tonys Red Carpet on June 8, “I was expecting someone to announce this as a prank or something like a ‘Punk’d’ episode, but it seems genuine. I didn’t need much persuading!

Despite saying goodbye to Harry Potter’s main antagonist more than 15 years back, this 37-year-old individual has continued to hold his character dear. Intriguingly, he admitted that he maintains a strong connection with Jason Isaacs, the actor who portrayed Lucius Malfoy in the series. (Check out all the stars here.)

Tom mentioned that he continues to address the White Lotus actor as dad, and vice versa. He praised the man’s talent, stating that he has acquired a vast amount of knowledge from him, both during their professional collaborations and in private moments.

Acting in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and returning to his role as the Slytherin student on Broadway, where he’s making his debut in a play set 19 years post-Battle of Hogwarts, felt remarkably familiar and comforting to him, like returning home.

He told TopMob, “Any task that’s truly significant and worthwhile should make you feel a little apprehensive.” He went on to explain, “It’s an old role, yet it feels like familiar shoes. But it also presents a fresh, unexplored aspect of Draco’s life – he’s now a parent, which I’m eager to delve into.

At first, when Tom heard about the chance, he confessed it seemed surreal, almost like a dream.

16 years after abandoning the character, he now has the opportunity to revisit him, this time as a father in a fresh narrative, which he recently discussed on Today (June 5). The production is an entirely separate tale from the Harry Potter movies I was familiar with.

19 years on, he added, “we’re no longer children; we’ve become the parents.” Though it feels like a recurring part for me, it’s also stepping into uncharted waters.
