Shortly following the unveiling of the latest trailer for Gears of War: Reloaded, its developers The Coalition shared additional details about the upcoming remake during an appearance on the official Xbox podcast. In this episode, technical director Kate Rayner and studio head Mike Crump delved into various topics, including explaining why creating Gears of War: Reloaded is a more substantial project for the team than simply updating the game as a remaster would be.
Rayner explained that Gears of War: Reloaded isn’t just a remake but has been significantly improved to utilize contemporary technology. He went on to say that they’ve boosted the resolution by an astounding 900% (nine times), doubled the frame rate, and now the campaign runs at 60 frames per second with multiplayer supporting both 60 and 120 frames per second. Additionally, he mentioned that it supports variable refresh rates, native high-dynamic range lighting, and has unlocked 4K assets and ultra-resolution textures that were previously unavailable in the original console versions of the game.

In addition to its content, the podcast showcases snippets from the initial Gears of War, running at a resolution of 720p with 30 frames per second on Xbox 360. This is contrasted with the enhanced visuals and frame rates seen in Gears of War: Reloaded. The demonstration highlights an early section of the game’s introductory level, and offers a glimpse into the Ultimate Edition of Gears of War, which operated at 1080p with a consistent 30 frames per second.
Rayner explained, “Next, we’re showcasing the Reloaded version running at its best in 4K resolution, boasting a smooth 60 frames per second. This allows for a closer inspection of intricate details, such as the carbon fiber in Marcus’s armor. Furthermore, you can appreciate the improved texture details through normal maps and the high-definition 4K textures within the surroundings. Lastly, take note of the real-time reflections off the pond – they are stunning!
Regarding the multiplayer aspect, Rayner has confirmed that the updated version of “Gears of War: Reloaded” will feature a state-of-the-art infrastructure to facilitate online play and matchmaking. This upgrade includes an expansion of the dedicated servers for PvP multiplayer, with more data centers being added globally. The servers also collect data at a rate of 60 times per second, thus significantly reducing the latency experienced by players.
As an enthusiastic player, I’m thrilled to share that the PC edition of “Gears of War: Reloaded” will not just be a simple port; it will be finely tuned for optimal performance on PC platforms. The developers have ensured that the game takes full advantage of what we PC gamers expect, offering uncapped frame rates, support for 4K and even 5K ultra-wide resolutions. The game adapts to whatever resolution your device runs on, making it versatile for a wide range of devices, from gaming laptops to handheld PC systems. They’ve put in a lot of effort to ensure scalability, catering to the diverse array of devices available today.
The action-packed game “Gears of War: Reloaded” is set to arrive for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 26th. Furthermore, starting from June 13th, players will have the opportunity to participate in a multiplayer beta testing phase.
