007: First Light Strikes a Balance Between Action and Systemic Gameplay – IO Interactive

Although the initial trailer suggesting action seems prominent in the forthcoming 007: First Light game, IO Interactive‘s franchise director, Jonathan Lacaille, clarified that there is more to the gameplay experience in the upcoming James Bond release.

During an interview with GamesRadar, Lacaille discussed the team’s aim to blend the fast-paced action sequences found in 007: First Light with the freer, systems-based gameplay similar to that seen in the Hitman series.

Lacaille stated, ‘We’re facing a choice between intense gameplay and the intricate systemic approach like in Hitman.’ ‘IOI has a rich background, which aligns perfectly with the IP,’ he added. ‘However, it doesn’t encompass the entirety of Bond’s character.’

Lacaille explained that while we heavily rely on IOI’s strengths, there was a need for us to develop many novel aspects that IOI had to adapt to and refine in order to deliver the complete Bond experience. For example, a new skill such as driving, which IOI hadn’t done before, is now being handled by us.

In contrast to the gameplay of Hitman, where using a gun and engaging in shootouts is seen as a “failure,” 007: First Light provides players with greater flexibility. They can not only participate in intense firefights, but also devise alternative strategies that will make them feel as clever as Bond.

According to Lacaille, “Shooting was often a key issue in the game Hitman, but here it plays a significant role.” He continued, “We aim to ensure that the game isn’t merely about continuous shooting. Instead, we want to provide players with numerous resources to make them feel as intelligent and cunning as Bond in the game.

Last week, we got a glimpse into the gameplay for the upcoming title, 007: First Light, through a recently released trailer. This sneak peek offered insights into some of the weapons and gadgets that players will be able to utilize as they embody James Bond. The trailer also hinted at the game’s release date, which is set for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.

Martin Ansdal, a level designer on the Hitman team, shared this week that 007: First Light will present an entirely fresh narrative in a unique setting. He additionally mentioned that IO Interactive currently has no intentions for a collaboration between the upcoming game and the extensive James Bond film series.

According to Andsal, the version of Bond you witnessed at First Light is entirely unique and so is its universe. It appears they’re aiming to create a Bond specifically tailored for video games, which means this universe will be different from others. There are currently no intentions for this universe to merge with any other.

In other crossover scenarios, Andsal pointed out that a character such as the antagonist Le Chiffre from Casino Royale wouldn’t fit in 007: First Light. However, it would be quite feasible for him to appear in a Hitman game, specifically as one of its Elusive Targets. In essence, he can make a guest appearance in the World of Assassination, but this doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a broader, interconnected universe.
