Chris Evans’ Shocking MCU Return Twist

As a devoted fan, I’d say Iron Man embodies the spirit of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s Captain America who truly personifies its soul. From his debut, Steve Rogers has consistently set the bar high by standing up for the underdog and risking everything he has. Even in challenging situations like in Captain America: Civil War, when he grapples with the tough choice between Tony Stark and Bucky Barnes after the revelation of Howard and Maria Stark’s fate, he ultimately proves to be an exceptional hero. His departure in Avengers: Endgame was heart-wrenching as he chose to live a peaceful life with Peggy Carter, his one true love, and pass on his shield to Sam Wilson.

After wrapping up Steve’s narrative, it appeared as if that marked the end of Chris Evans‘ acting journey. Nevertheless, he continued to shine in various productions such as “The Materialists” and “The Gray Man,” both helmed by his buddies, the Russo Brothers. Remarkably, Evans managed to make a brief appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” reprising his role as Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four series. This Phase 5 cameo gave the impression that the path was clear for the revival of the original Captain America. However, contrary to speculation, Chris Evans clarified that this won’t be happening in “Avengers: Doomsday.

During an interview with ScreenRant about The Materialists, Evans discussed the possibility of the Russos and Robert Downey Jr. working together without him. “I frequently chat with them,” he said. “Right now, Pedro [Pascal] is there. It’s a bit sad to miss out. It’s disappointing not to be part of the team again, but I’m certain they’re creating something extraordinary. I’m sure it will be even more challenging when it’s released, and you feel like you weren’t invited to the event.

It’s possible that Evans is deliberately being secretive about his return in the fifth Avengers film, as he might not want to ruin a major plot twist in Doomsday. However, it appears that he won’t be appearing in that movie. Fortunately, there’s another team-up film on the horizon that could potentially require him more than Doomsday does.

Avengers: Secret Wars Is the Perfect Spot for Captain America to “Return”

In the upcoming storyline, the New Avengers, Sam’s Avengers, X-Men, and Doctor Doom will be at odds with one another. This four-way confrontation is quite complex, especially given the current strained relationship between the New Avengers and Sam. Their disagreements about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ future have created a rift that needs to be resolved before they can effectively face off against Robert Downey Jr.’s antagonist. With so many key players involved, it seems unlikely that another significant character will enter the picture just yet.

It would make sense for Doom to fight against the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s heroes first, then recognize his need for backup. In the ‘Secret Wars’, he can journey through various universes and gather villainous versions of Marvel characters, such as a wicked Black Widow. However, Doom might have an unexpected advantage with a Captain America who works for HYDRA, aiming to destroy rather than protect his nation. The climax of ‘Secret Wars’ could involve Doom’s team clashing against whatever is left of the Avengers in an incredible battle.

Bringing back Evans as a villainous Captain America would offer the actor a unique dilemma and prevent the Marvel Cinematic Universe from treading familiar paths. The recent phases of the franchise have faced challenges in demonstrating that the superhero genre continues to expand, but Secret Wars could drastically change things if we reintroduce a previously retired character.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
