Over the past weekend, several significant gaming events took place, including Summer Game Fest, Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, and others. These events offered a sneak peek at numerous new and future games set to launch in 2025 and beyond. Overall, it was an exciting time for gamers, except perhaps for those eagerly waiting for any solid news about the release date of Hollow Knight: Silksong.
As an analyst, I too donned the proverbial clown makeup, hoping against hope that Summer Game Fest would bring us a new trailer and release date for Silksong. Alas, like many of us, I was left feeling let down by its conspicuous absence, save for a playful yet stinging remark from Geoff Keighley.
Doubling down on my anticipation, I transformed into the entire circus, praying that Silksong would make an appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase. To my delight, lo and behold, it did! However, Sarah Bond, the president of Xbox, only revealed that the game would be playable day one on their upcoming handheld console, Xbox Ally, scheduled for a Holiday 2025 release.
Turns out, despite anticipation that Silksong might launch this year and holiday period being quite broad, today we’ve received significant updates on Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date. The news didn’t originate from Microsoft’s event or any of the main presentations, but it came nonetheless!
Instead, the information originates straight from the official Hollow Knight Discord server, where Matthew “Leth” Griffin, the marketing and publishing manager for Silksong, provided a more specific timeframe for the game’s release while also clarifying that the game’s launch date is unrelated to the Xbox Ally debut.
He clarified the situation for his followers, saying that prior to the holiday, he had already verified the information. He emphasized that they are not bound to a console release.
It appears that Silksong won’t be coming out during the holiday season, but instead, it may debut in either September or October. This timing would make sense since Team Cherry didn’t announce a summer launch at events like Summer Game Fest and Xbox Games Showcase, which are commonly used for such announcements.

First unveiled back in February 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially slated for launch in the first half of 2023, but due to a decision by its creators to ensure the game’s quality, the release has been postponed indefinitely. More recently, Team Cherry confirmed that Silksong is still in development and shared nine seconds of gameplay footage during Nintendo’s Switch Direct in April, revealing a potential 2025 release date. To add excitement among players, Xbox also reminded its users that Silksong will be available on Game Pass.
Preceding the Summer Game Fest presentation over the past few days, observant fans on SteamDB spotted some backend updates to Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Steam page. This sparked much speculation and anticipation among fans that a full release date might be announced during the weekend. However, no official release date was given, but we did receive this…
Or more concisely: Fans on SteamDB noticed updates to Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Steam page before the Summer Game Fest presentation, leading to speculation of a potential release date announcement over the weekend. Despite no official release date being confirmed, we did get some news about it during this time.
Just like its predecessor Hollow Knight, Silksong is a Metroidvania-style platformer that focuses on challenging yet gratifying combat and strategic advancement through an intricately linked world. The initial game featured an unnamed hero referred to as “the Knight,” who battled to eradicate a plague from the insectoid kingdom of Hallownest. In this sequel, you’ll control Hornet, the warrior-princess of Hallownest, as she navigates a perilous new landscape.
Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available on various platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, the upcoming Xbox handhelds, Windows PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, the newly launched Nintendo Switch 2, and the original Nintendo Switch. For those with an Xbox or PC, playing through Xbox Game Pass is also possible.
