The PS5 version of Gears of War: Reloaded has been axed in a significant market. The Gears of War series has long been synonymous with the Xbox brand, serving as one of its cornerstones alongside Halo and Forza. Originally, Gears of War was one of the pioneering games for the Xbox 360, filling the void left by the absence of a Halo game at launch and helping to solidify the brand. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Gears of War and Halo effectively made the Xbox console a go-to choice for “bro shooter” games, eventually attracting series like Call of Duty and Battlefield with timed exclusive content and promotional partnerships.
It’s been mentioned numerous times that Gears of War might appear on PlayStation consoles. Epic Games did create a version of Gears of War 3 for the PlayStation 3, but it wasn’t made available officially. This was due to Epic working on Unreal Engine 3 for the PS3 and using Gears of War 3 as a test case. The PS3 release of Gears of War 3 was never intended originally, but speculation persisted. Now, the original Gears of War is indeed coming to PlayStation through a remastered edition, but unfortunately, one country won’t have access to it on the PS5.
Gears of War: Reloaded Won’t Release on PS5 in Japan
The makers of Xbox have announced that the PS5 version of Gears of War: Reloaded will not be available in Japan, owing to regional rating systems and platform regulations. Nevertheless, the remaster can still be enjoyed on Xbox and PC within Japan. It seems that PlayStation may have stricter rules when it comes to depictions of intense violence and gore in Japan. The specifics of the problem are not clear, but it’s plausible that Sony has more stringent policies in this region.
Unfortunately, Gears of War: Reloaded won’t be available on PlayStation 5 in Japan due to local rating limitations and platform guidelines. However, gamers can enjoy the game on its release day via Xbox Series X|S, PC, Game Pass, and Steam. We sincerely regret any disappointment this may cause for our Japanese players who have been eagerly anticipating the game’s launch.
Prior to the upcoming multiplayer beta of “Gears of War: Reloaded” this weekend, it’s unfortunate that Japanese PS5 gamers won’t have the opportunity to join in. The reason being, the PlayStation 5 has garnered more popularity than Xbox in Japan over the years due to Sony’s consistent efforts to cater to their audience. Although Microsoft has made strides to narrow the gap, it’s still significant. Consequently, this could potentially hamper the growth of “Gears of War” in Japan. However, it’s debatable whether Japan is a major market for a game like “Gears of War” anyway. Regardless, “Gears of War: Reloaded” is still expected to be a massive global release.
Gears of War: Reloaded will release on August 26th, 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
