Just Cause 5 Was Reportedly Cancelled

It’s been said that the development of Just Cause 5 was supposedly scrapped a couple of years ago, as reported by someone who worked on the project. The Just Cause series from Avalanche Studios stands out among action franchises in gaming for its over-the-top antics. The games are all about causing maximum chaos and emerged around the time that titles like Mercenaries 2 were being launched. As technology advanced, allowing studios to display large-scale destruction, many games began to adopt non-stop chaos. Just Cause left a mark due to its exceptional sandbox gameplay, which offers an experience reminiscent of the Fast and Furious movie series in video game form.

It appears that there’s been a significant push to expand the Just Cause game franchise, which once included a mobile game that unfortunately ceased operation due to lack of support. Fans have longed for a new installment in the series, but so far, none has been released. However, the IP’s value remains evident, as a Just Cause movie is under development and a writer was recently appointed for the project.

Just Cause 5 Was Reportedly Cancelled in 2023

Despite the strong desire among many gamers to experience Just Cause 5, taking advantage of the advanced capabilities offered by the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, this sequel may remain a fantasy. As reported by MP1st, Just Cause 5 was once in development, but according to a developer, it has been scrapped. The source pointed out that a former Sumo Digital employee listed the project on their resume, indicating they worked on the game from 2021 to 2023. Regrettably, the project has since been cancelled.

Sumo Digital isn’t the main developer on this franchise; instead, Avalanche has been developing a new game called Contraband for Xbox. It’s possible that Square Enix handed over the project to another studio to create a fresh installment. The development of Contraband has been hushed for years, causing fans to wonder about potential issues. However, whether there are indeed problems is uncertain; what is certain is that Contraband’s absence from Xbox’s recent gaming showcase was significant to fans.

There’s a possibility that Just Cause might resurface someday, yet this specific approach by Square Enix might not have been the best fit for them. We can only speculate about what Just Cause 5 could have been, but it’s disheartening that we haven’t had a new game in the action/adventure series for nearly seven years now. Despite its commercial success, it seems we may need to be patient before Just Cause makes another appearance.
