HBO’s Last of Us TV Composer Seemingly Confirms Season 4 Plans

During season 2, “The Last of Us” sparked plenty of conversations and this continued right up until the finale, leaving many viewers puzzled, especially those familiar with the video game. It was almost inconceivable that there wouldn’t be a season 3, but in April, it was officially confirmed. However, here’s an interesting tidbit: according to composer Jake Staley in a recent interview with The Last of Us Podcast: Savage Starlight, there’s a strong possibility that we might even get a season 4! You can listen to the full interview right here.

At the end of the interview, Talitha and A.Ron shared their excitement about discussing The Last of Us and their anticipation for the series to continue. However, Staley reassured them by mentioning that there are at least two more seasons of the show yet to come.

Staley stated confidently, “There will be at least two more seasons without a doubt. I won’t reveal anything beyond that.” This is exciting news for the show’s fans, as while speculation about a third season had been strong even before the second season premiered, there were some uncertainties regarding a potential fourth season.

The reason for this is because the plot of the game, The Last of Us Part 2, mirrors the structure of its predecessor by changing perspectives and having players control Abby for a substantial portion. Given that season 2 ended in a way that suggested a shift in focus, it seems highly likely that season 3 will also switch perspectives, as hinted by the finale.

What to Expect from Abby’s Story

If HBO decided to conclude the series with Season 3, it might cover the remaining storyline and final showdown. Given an extended number of episodes, this could be feasible. However, it appears they’re not taking this approach. Instead, events from Abby’s perspective could be expanded significantly, potentially occupying most of Season 3 if that was the chosen direction.

To ensure we cover at least four seasons, I’d recommend accelerating the pace slightly in Season 3 when it comes to Abby’s story. This would enable us to advance the plot further before the season concludes, preventing any criticism that Season 3 ends exactly where Season 2 left off, albeit with more details and new characters added.

The War Gets Its Due

One aspect that has been hinted at but not yet revealed is the conflict between the WLF and the Scars. In a recent interview on The Last of Us Podcast, creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin confirmed that viewers will indeed witness this war and learn more about who Isaac is chasing and the reasons behind it. As we’ve been renewed for season three, they can assure us that these details will be unveiled.

Mazin explained, ‘To tell you the truth, we weren’t sure if our show was going to be discontinued. However, we’ll definitely uncover his intentions – understanding a character’s motivations is crucial. But, there may be some suspense to keep us guessing for a bit.’

In the television series, the war will probably be delved into in greater depth and breadth compared to how it was portrayed in the games. Unlike the games where you don’t engage in the war or directly interact with it, you learn about it through characters’ conversations and collectible items found throughout the game. However, in this show, viewers will have a first-hand experience of the war, which may play a significant role in seasons 3 and possibly 4 as well.
