In the revamped DC Universe depicted in the James Gunn-directed film, Superman (David Corenswet) has been around for only three years. This means that his first appearance as a superhero would have been approximately in June 2022, based on promotional newspapers dated June 2025 and referencing a fictitious Daily Planet. In contrast, metahumans are said to have existed for over 300 years before Superman’s debut, as depicted in the narrative of Superman’s origin.
Gunn shared that a fresh, entertaining universe is being unveiled. This universe is set in an alternate timeline where superheroes have been around for centuries. The narrative follows the storyline of a unique superhero, who’s been active for three years and happens to be the most potent metahuman ever.
Besides being the world’s initial superhero, it’s also important to note that Superman isn’t the sole metahuman residing in Metropolis.
The novel “Superman: Welcome to Metropolis” unveiled that the futuristic city, known as the City of Tomorrow, is where the Justice Gang resides. This group comprises corporate superheroes supported by Maxwell Lord, a tycoon from LordTech, such as the intellectually gifted Mister Terrific, Green Lantern Guy Gardner who wields his ring, and Hawkgirl, who fights with her wings.

Although certain members of the Justice Squad will be seen again in upcoming ventures such as Peacemaker’s second season and HBO’s Lanterns, Gunn emphasizes that this film is a standalone project.
According to Gunn, it’s crucial that the standalone film featuring Superman works well. The movie tells a self-contained story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. It significantly impacts the lives of not just Superman (Clark Kent), but also Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan, and Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. These characters have a history together, as Lex had previously orchestrated a plan involving Metallo, as detailed in the prequel novel.
Title “Superman: Legacy” does not depict an origin story; rather, it narrates the tale of Superman’s quest to harmonize his Kryptonian roots with his human childhood in Smallville, Kansas as Clark Kent.
In his work on the “Superman” movie, Gunn mentions that the comic book series “All Star Superman” by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely is one of the three most significant influences. This 12-issue storyline unfolds during later years in Superman’s career when he had already become a well-known superhero.
The upcoming film “DC Studios’ Superman,” featuring David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, among others like Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/the Engineer, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Alan Tudyk as Superman Robot #4, Neva Howell as Ma Kent, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., is set to hit theaters on July 11.
