Excitement for James Gunn’s Superman is reaching unprecedented levels. Following the announcement of early screenings for Amazon Prime members, DC’s marketing team released a new trailer to announce that tickets are now available for purchase. Unlike most final trailers, this one for Superman features plenty of fresh footage and delves into the motivations behind the main antagonist, Lex Luthor. However, it’s not just Lex Luthor who will pose a threat to Superman; there’s a fight he must face off-screen, which revolves around another version of the character that fans find hard to forget.
Every instance when a fresh portrayal of Superman appears online, actor Henry Cavill becomes a popular topic on social media sites such as X. It’s worth mentioning that Cavill donned the cape in Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe, a series that remains dear to many fans even though it no longer exists. However, the debates are growing tired, and it’s high time for everyone to embrace Gunn’s vision for the character instead.
James Gunn’s Superman Is Making Up for the DCEU’s Mistakes
Many people long for the era when Snyder oversaw DC’s films because what Gunn is creating now is so significantly different. The gloomy superheroes have been swapped out for optimistic symbols who wear their capes with pride and protect the vulnerable. However, it’s important to note that Snyder’s universe wasn’t devoid of value. Unfortunately, it didn’t resonate with a broad audience, which was problematic when Marvel Studios was producing movies that appealed to various demographics. The DC Universe can’t risk alienating any segment of its fanbase and instead relies on the support of the majority. Gunn understands this well.
Instead, the filmmaker is choosing a fresh approach by placing the main character, Superman, into a universe brimming with metahumans. In his first solo outing, Superman seeks to find his niche in society, while Lex and others strive to convince people that they don’t require the hero’s presence. This situation is somewhat reminiscent of Cavill’s portrayal in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but with a twist: David Corenswet’s Man of Steel will be the central figure of his film.

Henry Cavill Gets the Short End of the Stick in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
In “Man of Steel,” there’s a lot to appreciate, making it all the more puzzling that its sequel, “BvS,” places Superman and Batman in direct conflict. Instead of focusing on developing Clark Kent’s character, “BvS” invests considerable time into Bruce Wayne’s motivations and hinting at Justice League members. As a result, Clark spends more time responding to other characters’ actions rather than initiating his own. This leaves him in a disadvantageous position when Doomsday appears and wreaks havoc on the city. At one point, Lex Luthor even manipulates Superman, which is unlikely to occur in his 2025 film.
In the new preview for Superman, we see the Steel Man handling all the challenges Lex Luthor throws his way, enjoying the process. Even when Lois Lane and the Kents are in danger of being harmed, Superman remains calm due to his inherent resilience. Unfortunately, Snyder’s portrayal of Superman struggles with its moral compass, leaving Henry Cavill in a difficult situation.
It’s unfair to blame Cavill for his roles not fully showcasing his talent, as fans tend to remember this and criticize other actors unjustly. Instead of harboring resentment, it would be more reasonable for them to watch Superman, and if they don’t enjoy it, they can peacefully rewatch their favorite DCEU movies again without attacking others.
Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
