By the year 2025, Eric Kripke is a prominent figure in television, currently overseeing the production of “The Boys” on Prime Video, a satirical superhero series known for its graphic violence. In the early 2000s, Kripke was famous for creating the network series, “Supernatural,” which ran for an impressive 15 seasons on The CW and was hugely successful. Many of its stars, such as Jensen Ackles, have enjoyed thriving careers since then. Interestingly, several “Supernatural” alumni will join the cast in Season 5 of “The Boys.” However, there was a point when this wouldn’t have mattered much because Kripke intended to conclude “Supernatural” much sooner.
The initial concept for the series featuring Sam and Dean Winchester, two monster hunters, was intended to conclude after five seasons. In the fifth season of ‘Supernatural’, Sam is drawn into Hell following an extended fight with Lucifer. Dean vows to honor his brother’s sacrifice by allowing it to happen, but without his partner, he chooses to pursue a relationship with Lisa, an old acquaintance. Despite this, Dean can’t resist meddling in Season 6 and makes efforts to rescue his brother. Had Kripke stuck to his original plan, though, Dean would eventually move on to another issue as he grew weary.
In a conversation on the “Supernatural: Then and Now” podcast, Eric Kripke revealed some alternate plans for the show’s finale. Originally, Sam was to descend into Hell, and Dean would make a concerted effort to rescue him in a montage reminiscent of what was shown, but ultimately fail because Dean had to learn to let go, as his brother was being tormented in Hell. However, when they initially conceived this ending, they weren’t as specific about the details. They hadn’t imagined anything like Dean letting go of Sam in Hell. Instead, it might have been more like, “I don’t know where he went, but I’m going to let him go.
Kripke elaborated that if things had played out differently, Dean would have fathered a daughter named Samantha with Lisa. This girl was drawn into the family’s profession following an unsettling event reminiscent of their usual encounters. “Then a mysterious figure appears over the crib,” he added, referencing the opening scene of Supernatural. “The screen goes dark, suggesting that the story is about to restart. Essentially, Dean will take on John’s role, and Samantha will become the new demon hunter… I intended it to end with a hint of uncertainty. ‘Will this tale continue?’
Although Kripke didn’t clarify if The CW was ready to approve a sequel series, an alternate ending as he proposed could still benefit him, considering the original ending from Season 15 has faced considerable criticism.

The Original Ending of Supernatural Gave Dean Winchester a Happy Ending
A common criticism following the airing of the Supernatural finale was that it unfairly treated Dean. After battling countless fearsome monsters and divine beings over many years, an ordinary vampire proved to be his undoing. He confided to Sam that he was ready to move on, and his younger brother honored his decision. Sam then went on to live a fulfilling life until he passed away from natural causes and reunited with Dean in Heaven.
In other words, it’s not surprising that Sam might allow his brother to depart, given his tendency to want to quit hunting. Yet, sometimes deviating from the norm can be a good thing, and there’s a strong possibility that Dean’s desire for a family life would have been accepted by Sam. Unfortunately, we can only speculate because the series chose to continue until Season 15 without providing a definite answer.
Supernatural is streaming on Netflix.
