Sony’s PS6 Strategy Is ‘Top of Mind’, Cloud Streaming to Remain Ancillary to Local Play

During a corporate interview, the leading figures at PlayStation are queried about the forthcoming direction of their platform. Unsurprisingly, it appears that this is currently a significant focus within the organization.

Inquired about whether cloud streaming eliminates the necessity of a new console (and if PlayStation is developing one), President and CEO Hideaki Nishino clarified that not only is the PS6 being developed, but cloud gaming will continue to be an alternative, instead of the main emphasis.

Nishino outlines PlayStation’s 11-year journey with cloud streaming services, expressing satisfaction with the progress made thus far. However, he emphasizes the importance of ensuring a financially viable model for cloud gaming to support continued expansion in the long run.

He goes on to explain that maintaining overall network stability isn’t something we can directly influence, and that the higher expense per playtime, relative to the conventional console approach, persists as an ongoing issue for us.

Nishino considers cloud gaming as a supplementary means for gamers to obtain content, not as a foundation upon which to construct the business.

We think most gamers prefer to enjoy games directly on their devices without being overly reliant on internet speed. The PS5 and its upgraded version, the PS5 Pro, seem to confirm this idea by offering a robust offline gaming experience.

He mentions a significant level of excitement for PlayStation’s upcoming strategic plans for its next generation. At the moment, he’s unable to disclose more information, but it’s clear that the future direction of the platform is currently under close consideration.

Nishino ends by expressing their intention to delve into discovering a more immersive and upgraded approach for users to interact with our content and offerings.

To put it another way, Sony continues to follow its traditional pattern of console releases, implying that the PS6 is likely already being worked on behind the scenes. While cloud streaming remains a possibility, it won’t be the primary focus due to the unpredictable nature of global internet connections.

It’s being whispered that alongside the primary PS6 home console, Sony might also be developing a portable counterpart, which could share characteristics with the recently unveiled Xbox Alloy of Xbox in terms of design and functionality.
