James Gunn’s DC Studios declared the third adult-oriented series in their lineup of superhero projects. From his time at the helm of the Blue Brand, co-CEO of DC Studios has been firm about this: He aims to delve deeper into the range of ratings set by the MPAA compared to some of his peers might have done before. This implies that R-rated shows like “Peacemaker” will share the spotlight with more family-friendly titles, such as the upcoming PG-13 “Superman” film.
DC Studios has officially announced that the adult-rated animated series “Mister Miracle” will join its lineup. This series is inspired by the acclaimed 12-issue comic book run of renowned creator Tom King. It marks the third television show to receive the prestigious mature rating, joining “Peacemaker” and “Creature Commandos.
Initially, Variety announced the news during their attendance at the yearly Annecy Festival held in Annecy, France. They disclosed that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are collaborating to produce a new R-rated series, as reported by the media outlet.
In simpler terms, “Mister Miracle” is the newest mature-themed animated series produced by the studio, which typically means it will carry a TV-MA rating, similar to an R-rated movie.
It’s important to mention that while we haven’t discussed it yet, there’s another adult-rated DC Universe animated series aside from those mentioned: Harley Quinn. Although this HBO Max show didn’t originally fall under the DC Studios label, Gunn and his team have been responsible for its recent seasons.
Information regarding “Mister Miracle” has yet to be disclosed, including who will play the role in the profanity-laced superhero series. The location where it will be broadcast and whether it will air on traditional cable television concurrently with a streaming release are still undecided.
Every R-rated DC Studios TV Series Announced So Far
Creature Commandos
In December 2024, the animated series “Creature Commandos” premiered on HBO Max, marking a significant step in James Gunn‘s vision for the DC Universe. The show centers around a team of superheroes from DC Comics (with some members slated to appear in the live-action film “Superman”), and it delves into the exploits of this black ops squad as they carry out orders from Viola Davis’ character, the sinister Amanda Waller, in an R-rated setting.
The much-loved streaming series has already been confirmed for a second season. As per showrunner Dean Lorey, the adult-oriented spectacle is moving swiftly towards its return to our screens, promising an increased dose of mature chaos that viewers will be eager to witness.
Peacemaker
Originally not part of DC Studios, the show “Peacemaker” has now found its place under their brand, with Season 2 due on August 21. This live-action series follows the story of John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith (Peacemaker), who is far from perfect and finds himself tasked by the government agency ARGUS for various superhero assignments.
The first season of this popular show introduced an R-rated experience to HBO Max, filled with blood, nudity, and numerous profanities across its initial eight episodes. It appears that Season 2 will continue in the same vein, as James Gunn and the original creative team are back for another round of Peacemaker excitement.
Mister Miracle
The latest R-rated DC Studios project that’s just been revealed is none other than “Mister Miracle.” This new animated series, derived from the 2017 comic book run by Tom King, has been characterized as both harrowing and hilarious, with moments that are heart-wrenchingly poignant. (As reported by Cinema Wire on X)
Mister Miracle’s story revolves around a character who was forsaken by his divine father and nurtured by the Devil instead. He subsequently embarks on a journey to rescue his loved ones, as well as the world, encountering various deity-like beings along the way.
