Following the demise of visionary director David Lynch in January, there’s been a slight lack of captivating strangeness worldwide. Despite battling emphysema towards the end, co-creator of ‘Twin Peaks’, Mark Frost asserted that Lynch never waned in his creative fire and they were already contemplating a Season 4 for their cult classic series. ‘Twin Peaks’ made waves when it debuted on ABC in 1990, challenging the norms of network television. It ran for two seasons there, with a film ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me’ released in 1992, and another revival on Showtime in 2017 called ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’.
In an interview with NME, Frost mentioned that he and Lynch had been brainstorming ideas for a potential continuation of the show “Twin Peaks.” Frost added, “I was concerned about his health, so I didn’t push him on it, but David’s creativity never seemed to wane.” Although there might be more story left to tell in the quaint northwestern town of Twin Peaks, Frost, who is not only a collaborator of Lynch’s, but also a close friend, isn’t in a hurry to start writing. “It’s still too early, but I plan on giving it some serious thought.
Frost Talks a Potential Season 4 and His Friendship With Lynch
If some fans are worried that a network might revive the series after David Lynch’s death, which has been happening frequently recently, they can be reassured. David Frost revealed that he and Lynch (presumably now his estate) retain ownership of Twin Peaks, and so far, there haven’t been any attempts to reboot it.
Frost emphasized that since this was our own universe we were dealing with, we aimed to prevent any misuse that could be harmful or foolish. Moving ahead, we intend to stick to our roots and uphold the standards we’ve established. We’ve set a bar for ourselves, and it’s crucial that we maintain it as the show evolves.
Reflecting on working with Lynch, Frost had nothing but praise for his fallen friend.
The filmmaker conveyed that he was fearlessly innovative, always pushing himself to exceed his previous achievements, living by a philosophy of seizing each moment. He was, at heart, an artist above all else. Frost reminisced about the camaraderie with Lynch, particularly missing their shared bouts of laughter and extensive discussions that spanned from personal life events to contemporary and eternal topics.
Even though Mark Frost is the appropriate guardian of “Twin Peaks,” additional seasons or a reboot of the series seem somewhat incongruous without David Lynch overseeing it. The “Twin Peaks” universe, in all its forms, is a testament to creativity, and even with Frost at the helm, treading carefully to preserve Lynch’s legacy is essential to prevent any potential blemish.
All episodes of Twin Peaks begin streaming on MUBI on June 13th.
