As the eighth season of “My Hero Academia” concludes, marking the end of this beloved superhero shonen series, it’s a great opportunity to re-explore some of the villains that significantly contributed to the compelling narrative of Deku and Class 1-A. Remember, a hero is defined by their adversaries, and Kohei Horikoshi created some formidable antagonists capable of challenging Hero Society. In ranking the top ten villains from “My Hero Academia”, narrowing down the roster of evil-doers was no simple feat, but we believe our “Top Ten Best Villains in My Hero Academia” does justice to those who stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Muscular
In the third season of “My Hero Academia”, the character known as Muscular, or Goto Imasuji, served as a formidable one-on-one opponent for Izuku Midoriya. Accompanied by the League of Villains, Muscular wasn’t primarily a strategic threat compared to characters like All For One and Overhaul, but rather functioned more as a physical combatant, or a “grunt”. However, his bloodthirsty disposition and eagerness for battle contributed significantly to one of Deku’s most exciting fight scenes during that anime season. Additionally, it was quite rewarding to witness Midoriya defeating Muscular with a single blow in later seasons after the League of Villains’ escape from prison.
Overhaul
In the anime series “My Hero Academia,” Kai Chisaki, also known as Overhaul, was an exceptional villain, distinct from All For One’s reign of terror. A figure within the Yakuza, Overhaul possessed a unique Quirk that enabled him to dismantle and reassemble whatever he touched. Not only did he command a large group of villains, but he also invented Quirk-infused bullets by leveraging Eri’s rewind Quirk’s power. In the fourth season of “My Hero Academia,” Overhaul was undeniably the most significant antagonist among the major shonen villains.
ReDestro
In the series My Hero Academia, Rikiya Yotsubashi, known as ReDestro, was an intriguing antagonist. He didn’t initially aim for the annihilation of Hero Society, but instead found common ground with Shigaraki and the League of Villains. His goal, however, was to establish a world where the government would not control or regulate people’s Quirks. The Meta Liberation Army (MLA) gained popularity among the public as more citizens became attracted to this idea.
ReDestro, with his wealth, intelligence, and physical strength granted by his Quirk, made him a formidable adversary who could potentially have faced Class 1-A independently, outside of the League of Villains.
Stain
Stain was a formidable solo antagonist who made his debut in the second season of “My Hero Academia.” His powerful personality and approach resonated with many other villains, causing them to join his cause. Initially aiming to eliminate heroes that he considered unsuitable for crime-fighting, Stain was a swordsman able to freeze people by consuming their blood. However, in the final war, instead of siding with All For One and his troops, Stain chose to support All Might for the climactic anime battle. Although he has changed sides, his villainous past makes him an ideal choice for this list.
Spinner
Among all the villains belonging to All For One’s group, it could be argued that Spinner possessed the least powerful Quirk originally. However, this perspective shifted when he received an upgrade from the “Demon Lord.” It wasn’t his powers that set Spinner apart; rather, it was his distinctive lizard-like appearance that made him a frequent target of harassment. This scenario underscores the lingering prejudice in the world of My Hero Academia towards Quirk-wielders whose abilities make them appear significantly less human than their peers. Spinner served as an exemplary villain who, despite being less malicious than many of his counterparts, played a crucial role in opposing Hero Society.
Twice
There’s little not to appreciate about Twice – much like Spinner, he seemed more like a tagalong in the League of Villains, but his unique backstory, abilities, and character set him apart. However, his Quirk had a dark side: it enabled him to produce infinite duplicates of himself or any object he touched, but this came at a great cost as he suffered from severe mental issues due to fearing that he might lose himself among his duplicates. Ultimately, Twice met his end at the hands of Hawks, and despite being an antagonist, his death remains one of the most emotional moments in the series.
Toga
It’s essential for our audience that Toga, the infamous villain with a thirst for blood, is included in this list, and they would be justified to expect so. Since her introduction in season two, Toga has been a significant character in the series, earning the title of popular antagonist among fans. With her fixation on Deku, she not only wreaked havoc but also served as an illustration of the Quirk Singularity Theory as her powers escalated to unprecedented heights. Although Toga met her end in My Hero Academia’s seventh season, her impact on the Hero Society and anime industry as a whole will remain significant for quite some time.
Dabi
Among all the villains on this list, Dabi stands out as having one of the most chilling ties to Hero Society. Originally known as Toya Todoroki, he is none other than Endeavor’s son and Shoto Todoroki’s older brother. Born from his father’s abuse and All For One’s manipulation after the Todoroki family’s fallout, Dabi possesses a flame-manipulating Quirk that surpasses every other member of his family in the fire department, making him exceptionally powerful. In the final war, he was eventually bested by Shoto. With a complex and captivating backstory, Dabi has left a lasting impression on fans even after the manga’s conclusion.
Shigaraki
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the formidable abilities and menacing disposition of the apparent successor to All For One – a figure whose ambition to dismantle Hero Society makes him one of the most treacherous individuals in our realm. Initially, his quirk of decay was chilling enough, but Shigaraki’s powers grew even more terrifying as he evolved before fully inheriting the might of All For One.
His upbringing, riddled with heartrending hardships, is a testament to his resilience and serves as a bitter reminder for All For One – a constant reminder of his own past and his ties to the world of crime-fighting heroes. Given that the climactic battle of the final season pits Shigaraki against Deku in a titanic showdown between All For One and One For All, it’s only fitting that this destructive force graces our list.
All For One
In the popular anime series “My Hero Academia,” All For One stands out as the most formidable villain, hands down. If we were to rank the villains, it would be hard not to place All For One at the very top. His character, with his wicked personality and near-invincible abilities, has played a pivotal role in shaping antagonists like Shigaraki and Dabi into who they are today. The musical score accompanying All For One is also exceptional, potentially earning a spot among the greatest for any anime villain. As the final season builds up to the ultimate showdown between the Demon Lord (All For One) and All Might, it seems fitting to conclude this ranking with the villain who initiated it all.
