As a follower, I’m excitedly counting down the days until I step into the role of Lois Lane in James Gunn’s “Superman.” Before our DC Universe’s first movie graces the big screen, fans should catch up on some of my best performances in movies and TV shows. The anticipation surrounding my entry into the superhero world is immense, as “Superman” promises a fresh start for DC. This film will also be the 12th live-action adaptation of Superman/Clark Kent, with David Corenswet taking on the lead role. As a skilled journalist at the Daily Planet, Lois is not only Superman’s love interest but also plays a crucial role in the movie. In the early stages of my career, I made guest appearances in shows like “Gossip Girl,” “CSI: Miami,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Orange is the New Black.” However, it was after landing more substantial roles in both television and film that I won Emmy and Golden Globe awards. With a diverse range of genres under my belt, from comedy to Western, many of my movies are well worth watching.
Here are five outstanding films and series that showcase Brosnahan’s best work, which DC enthusiasts might want to explore prior to Superman.
1) The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Rachel Brosnahan won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her exceptional portrayal as Midge Maisel, the lead character in Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” This humorous series, set in the 1950s and ’60s, follows Midge’s transformation into a stand-up comedian following her husband’s departure. Throughout its five seasons, the show is both funny and heartfelt. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is a must-watch for those seeking to see Brosnahan at her best. Brosnahan skillfully captures Midge’s emotional and comedic aspects with sincerity and impeccable timing. To date, this project is arguably Brosnahan’s most renowned and acclaimed work.
2) Manhattan
The series titled Manhattan, which originally aired in 2014 and 2016, didn’t get as much recognition as it deserved and remains an underappreciated historical drama. This show offers a captivating portrayal of the Manhattan Project, a real-life event involving the construction of the atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The story is told from various scientists and their families’ perspectives. Although based on true events, the series focuses more on fictional characters than actual individuals. This choice results in intriguing character arcs and engaging narrative developments as both personal and professional dramas unfold within Los Alamos.
Notable among the show’s talented cast is Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Abby Isaacs, the wife of a promising young physicist seeking recognition. Abby’s journey of self-discovery takes unexpected twists, and Brosnahan delivers an exceptional performance in this role. Fans of DC shows should consider giving Manhattan a watch, as it deserves more acknowledgement.
3) Dead for a Dollar
2022’s “Dead for a Dollar” is an exceptional Western movie that has managed to evade much attention. The narrative unfolds in the 1890s and follows Rachel Kidd, portrayed by Brosnahan, who is the wife of a businessman and finds herself abducted and held ransom in Mexico. A bounty hunter is employed to locate Rachel and bring her back home, but events take an unexpected turn. At first glance, Brosnahan’s character seems like a typical damsel in distress; however, a surprising plot twist towards the end of the movie masterfully defies expectations. “Dead for a Dollar” boasts an impressive ensemble including Brosnahan, Christoph Waltz, and Willem Dafoe. The film’s thrilling action sequences seamlessly complement its dramatic elements, making “Dead for a Dollar” a Western that is definitely worth watching.
4) I’m Your Woman
2020’s Amazon original film “I’m Your Woman” features Brosnahan as Jean, a woman forced into hiding with her child following the mysterious disappearance of her husband during his involvement in organized crime. Set against the backdrop of the 1970s, “I’m Your Woman” offers a fresh perspective on the crime genre by focusing more on those affected by criminal activities rather than the violent criminals themselves. Brosnahan delivers an outstanding performance that captures Jean’s struggle with independence and internal conflicts as she adapts to a dangerous new reality. For fans of gripping crime dramas, “I’m Your Woman” is a must-watch.
5) The Courier
2020’s “The Courier” is another outstanding period drama that showcases the talents of actress Brosnahan. This movie recounts the real-life tale of British businessman Greville Wynne, who secretly worked to resolve the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis through a covert operation. In the supporting cast, Brosnahan brings to life Emily Donovan, an American CIA officer instrumental in coordinating Wynne’s undercover courier mission to the Soviet Union, all while Benedict Cumberbatch plays the lead role. “The Courier” is a riveting spy story filled with tension and suspense, as Wynne’s daring escapades keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The film offers an astonishing portrayal of these true events that will leave audiences in awe. Despite Brosnahan’s relatively smaller role, “The Courier” stands out as one of her finest performances to date.
