In a slightly different wording: The initial “Scream” film is still considered a masterpiece, and while director Wes Craven certainly deserves a lot of praise for that, screenwriter Kevin Williamson arguably deserves an equal share, if not more. Williamson, like Craven, contributed significantly to the success of “Scream 2”. He didn’t participate in “Scream 3”, but returned for “Scream 4”. Now, after two films under the direction of Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (also known as Radio Silence), Williamson is coming back to the series he originated with “Scream 7”. However, this time, he’s not returning as a screenwriter (the script for this installment is being written by Guy Busick), but rather as a director.
So far, it’s clear that Scream 7 will have several characters from the franchise’s past making a comeback, even those who were previously deceased. However, among the returning cast, Neve Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott, is one of the few still alive. Director Williamson has hinted that we might get a peek into her personal life in this installment.
Initially, Williamson shared with Collider how significant Sidney Prescott is to him, and he credited Campbell for inspiring him to rejoin the series despite his initial reluctance due to the passing of Craven. Later, he discussed the valuable moments we experience alongside Sidney in this new installment, stating, “One thing I appreciate about this film is that we get a chance to visit her home and discover who she has become today, observing how she raises her children, and learning what type of person can endure all she’s been through and still find the strength to continue living. When Ghostface makes an appearance, it provides another perspective on the story.

Through the course of the franchise, glimpses into Sid’s personal life have been sparse, with one notable instance being in Radio Silence’s 2022 revival when she was depicted pushing a stroller while out for a walk. In this scene, it was also revealed that she was married to a man named Mark, who many assumed was Patrick Dempsey’s character Detective Mark Kincaid from Scream 3. However, it has been disclosed that this Mark is actually a new character named Mark Evans, portrayed by Joel McHale.
In simpler terms, Williamson acknowledged the difficulty of creating a film for Scream 7 that matches the success of its six predecessors. Essentially, he said, “It’s tough. We’re dealing with Scream 7 here. Let’s not kid ourselves. It’s a challenge to make it both terrifying and enjoyable for the audience. Scream is more than just horror – it’s funny, dramatic, emotional, and scary. Keeping all those elements alive while making it fresh and keeping the surprises coming takes a lot of hard work.
