It’s true that many people enjoy discussing the popular DC Comics characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. However, constantly being exposed to tales about this select group can become monotonous. The secondary and tertiary characters of DC have a wealth of interesting stories that often go unnoticed. It’s worth noting that these lesser-known narratives sometimes showcase exceptional writing, as the creative teams are granted more freedom to experiment with fresh ideas. Perhaps it’s time to shine a light on these underappreciated heroes (and villains) and appreciate their unique stories. Fingers crossed that we’ll witness more adaptations of their tales in diverse formats, such as live-action and animated productions.
It’s important to clarify that I’m not trying to belittle A-list heroes – they play a crucial role in keeping the franchise vibrant. By carrying the weight, they create opportunities for lesser-known characters to tell distinctive and engaging tales. However, it’s evident that these prominent figures cast long shadows, sometimes overshadowing their peers. Take the Justice League as an example; despite having numerous heroes on the team, the same few consistently take the spotlight. Behind the famous and towering names of DC Comics lie some real gems of storytelling, and it’s high time we shine a light on them more often.
Some of the Best Storytelling Is Hiding Behind the B and C Listers
To begin with, let’s address the obvious: ranking heroes alphabetically or by class (A, B, C) is subjective and can lead to disagreements. This could be part of the issue at hand, as while people argue about the mid-tier heroes, the more popular ones continue to dominate the spotlight. It seems that while people are engaged in debates over the middle ground of heroes, the well-established top characters continue to hog the limelight. Characters considered A-list are those who consistently receive leading roles and high-profile storylines, such as Batman. They often have the most acclaimed writers working on their stories and frequently star in solo series. B-list heroes are one step below this tier, occasionally receiving standalone series, but not as widely recognized as A-listers. C-list characters are even further down the ladder, with a smaller chance of getting solo series, and so on.
Hidden among less popular tales in B and C categories are some real treasures. Those who know where to look will find them, as they’re not too hard to discover. Creators intentionally place these stories for discovery, while also showcasing exceptional storytelling that the franchise is known for. They take daring risks with character origins, new plotlines, and character development.
In the midst of less prominent B and C-list narratives, you’ll find some truly valuable nuggets. Those who can spot them will reap rewards because they aren’t deeply concealed. The creators want these stories to be found, using this platform to demonstrate some of the franchise’s finest storytelling, pushing boundaries with fresh character backstories, innovative plot twists, and character progression.
Creating Complex and Bold Characters
Black Canary serves as a striking illustration of this concept. Dinah has traversed various paths, ranging from romancing a widely adored superhero to heading an all-female squad of heroes. Her narrative is both captivating and intricate, revealing the grittier aspects of being a superhero. Despite undergoing numerous retcons and alterations, one could posit that these occur due to her creative team’s freedom to make such executive decisions. Dinah’s story illuminates her prominence, positioning her as the moral compass within her tight-knit group of heroes, demonstrating her innate leadership qualities and resilience.
On the polar opposite end lies Booster Gold. He’s quite the jester, yet adored by many. His humor is unpredictable and his smile is radiant. However, his tales occasionally veer off unexpectedly, even leaving his most dedicated fans in awe due to their emotional intensity. A glimpse into this aspect of his narrative can be found in Booster’s struggles with time travel (such as his repeated efforts to rescue a cherished companion), which serve as the foundation for these emotional elements.
Taking Daring Storytelling Risks
Occasionally, DC Comics takes fans by surprise with extraordinary tales that aren’t typically associated with their top-tier heroes. While it’s common to link such stories with well-known characters, it’s worth noting that numerous ones originate from lesser-known heroes within the universe. For instance, Grant Morrison’s Animal Man tackled pressing issues like animal rights and environmentalism, demonstrating the wealth of thought-provoking narratives available for readers to explore.
As a cinephile, I found myself deeply immersed in four intriguing graphic novels that delved into complex human emotions and themes. First, Mister Miracle (by Tom King & Mitch Gerads) offered a compelling portrayal of the hero’s inner struggles with depression and trauma, seamlessly intertwining his superhero persona with his domestic life.
Next, I was captivated by the unique ensemble in Doom Patrol, a series that fearlessly tackled topics ranging from mental health to personal identity, creating an engaging and thought-provoking reading experience.
Shade, the Changing Man (by Peter Milligan & Chris Bachalo) was another masterpiece that delved deep into the concept of self-identity, presenting it in a fresh and captivating way. Furthermore, this series also explored themes such as forgiveness and American culture, adding depth to its already rich narrative.
Lastly, Deadman (by Mike Baron & Kelley Jones) was a haunting exploration of death, loss, and morality, offering a unique and chilling perspective on these universal themes. These graphic novels are must-reads for anyone seeking a thoughtful and engaging dive into the human condition.
The examples provided merely scratch the surface, and that’s what makes it exciting! DC Comics is home to a wealth of extraordinary, innovative, and impactful narratives that aren’t exclusive to the most renowned characters within the franchise. It would be delightful to see more of these hidden gems resurface, as there can never be too much recognition given to many of the captivating stories we’ve encountered.
