Asus ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X to Start Pre-Orders in August, Launch in October – Rumour

Microsoft and Asus have revealed their ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X portable gaming systems, but neither company has shared details about the prices or release dates for these products yet. The announcement stated that they would come out later this year; however, a recent report by leaker Extas1s suggests that pre-orders might begin in August, with a launch scheduled for October.

According to reports from Extas1s, it’s anticipated that the less potent ROG Xbox Ally will retail for approximately €599. The leaker claims they’ve verified this price point with two separate European retailers. Conversely, the more robust ROG Xbox Ally X is expected to cost €899, aligning its pricing with Asus’s own ROG Ally X.

Earlier, Asus’ gaming marketing content senior manager, Whitson Gordon, disclosed that the primary factors behind not incorporating OLED displays in the ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X were pricing and power consumption. Instead, these systems will be outfitted with 7-inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD screens, offering variable refresh rate technology.

Gordon stated, “We’ve been experimenting and developing prototypes using OLED technology, but when you consider Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), it hasn’t reached the level we aim for. I want to make it clear here and now – a display without VRR is not a gaming display in my view for the year 2025. It’s an essential feature, and at this moment, OLED with VRR consumes more power and costs more than the LCD we’re using on the Ally.

In summary, Gordon pointed out that, considering the fact that people usually purchase handheld gaming systems as additional devices rather than primary ones, it was crucial to maintain affordable prices for both systems. He explained that using OLED displays would significantly increase the cost of each handheld device, which they aimed to avoid.

Gordon simply stated, “I won’t discuss pricing further. It’s essential to match your assumptions with the market trends and our current endeavors here. Keep in mind that additional features like 32GB storage, OLED screen, Z2 Extreme, and other premium add-ons would significantly increase the price beyond what you’re accustomed to on the Ally, a price point most users aren’t prepared to pay.

Not long after their unveiling, Microsoft and Asus shared a video detailing the key aspects of both the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The video also showcased a preliminary version of the portable gaming device housed within a makeshift cardboard casing.

The ASUS ROG Xbox Allies sport different specifications: The standard model boasts a AMD Ryzen Z2A processor, paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM and 512GB storage. Meanwhile, the X variant is equipped with an advanced AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM, and a larger 1TB storage capacity. Both models operate on the Windows platform.
