According to creative director Graeme Timmins, at their heart, Vault Hunters are similar to adventurers seeking treasures and rewards. They tend to be daring individuals who aren’t afraid to take charge and navigate the murky waters between right and wrong. Fundamentally, they’re driven by a desire for money, wealth, power, or recognition, and they’re prepared to go to great lengths to achieve their objectives.

The Managing Director of Narrative, Lin Joyce, additionally sheds light on the driving forces behind the Vault Hunters’ journeys. Joyce highlights that while these characters may be in search of treasure, they often find themselves drawn to and even thriving on the disorder that usually characterizes the main game environments.

According to Joyce, the studio’s method for designing a Vault Hunter begins with ideas generated internally. Employees throughout the company can propose new Vault Hunters. As they spend so much time playing the game, they naturally think about what could make it more engaging next. They gather these suggestions within the company and evaluate them, frequently combining parts of several pitches to create something truly outstanding. The process then moves on to the design stage.

Art director Adam May notes that when designing a Vault Hunter, various characteristics of the character are taken into account. The aim is to make the character attractive and relatable for players, but also to convey their playstyle and personality through their appearance alone. This collaboration frequently involves the game’s design and concept teams, as suggested by Timmins.

In simpler terms, lead game designer Nick Thurston highlights that the essence of Borderlands is all about being cool and enjoyable. He adds that every aspect of the game, including abilities and gear, should align with what the community anticipates, catering to people from diverse backgrounds. However, the common thread is that they must be exciting and entertaining to play.

The anticipated release of Borderlands 4 is set for September 12th. It’s going to be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and potentially Nintendo Switch 2. Following the series’ usual pattern, the new game will offer a single-player campaign mode and an option for multiplayer cooperation with up to three companions.

Lately, Randy Pitchford, head of the studio, expressed that Borderlands 4 is expected to surpass its predecessors in various aspects, even subjectively. Furthermore, he hinted that the studio and publisher 2K Games will reveal the price of Borderlands 4 very soon.
