PS5 Exclusive Comes to Xbox Series X, But With a Major Downgrade

A title previously exclusive to PlayStation 5 (PS5) has now been made available on Xbox Series X and S, however, Xbox enthusiasts will find that this release comes with a significant reduction in quality. Meanwhile, PS5 continues to see an influx of Xbox games, with the current most popular pre-order on the PlayStation Store being an Xbox game. The opposite trend is less prevalent. When exclusives do move from PS5 to other platforms, they are often third-party titles rather than first-party offerings directly from Sony. For instance, when Final Fantasy 16 was launched in 2023, it was exclusive to the PS5. This wasn’t because Sony owned the Final Fantasy franchise or even the publishing rights for the game, but simply because they paid for the exclusivity. Two years later, this role-playing game (RPG) has finally been released on Xbox consoles, but it comes with certain issues.

The latest findings indicate that the Xbox edition of Final Fantasy 16 experiences significantly poorer performance than its counterpart on the PlayStation 5. To put it simply, while the PS5 version typically operates at a resolution of 1440p, the Xbox version runs at 1224p instead.

The Xbox version seems to offer less than optimal quality, with various elements appearing subpar compared to other consoles. This is surprising because cross-platform games are usually designed to run identically on both consoles. In some cases, the Xbox Series X version actually appears slightly sharper, which is an unusual improvement.

In terms of visual quality, not only does the Xbox port encounter issues when running in resolution mode, but it also struggles when switched to performance mode. While the Xbox Series X version outputs at a lower 720p resolution, the PS5 version maintains a 1080p resolution in the same setting. The Xbox version does offer a consistent 60 FPS, whereas the PS5 offers a more fluctuating frame rate in performance mode. However, the improvement in frame rate doesn’t fully compensate for the significant drop in resolution quality that the Xbox port experiences.

Regarding the report, it’s Digital Foundry’s tech experts who have tested and compared the new Xbox version against the PS5 version extensively. Although potential issues could be addressed through a future update, as of now, there’s no news about such an update being planned.
