‘Incoming sub model!’ — PC gamers react to Nexus Mods ownership change

One of the biggest and widely used platforms for hosting mods online, known as Nexus Mods, has recently been taken over by new owners. The website’s founding figure made this announcement.

This morning, the founder of Nexus Mods, Robin Scott (commonly known as Dark0ne), penned an extensive blog post on the platform to clarify the current state of affairs.

It’s been approximately 24 years since I started managing Nexus Mods, and now it’s time for me to take a step back from the daily operations. This decision hasn’t been made lightly; quite the contrary, I believe it serves the best interest of both myself and our community.

While Scott doesn’t expressly say who purchased Nexus Mods, they go on to explain:

Indeed, the control over Nexus Mods has been passed on to new hands, but allow me to clarify this isn’t a corporate departure or a secretive transaction. Instead, it’s about prioritizing my well-being – something I should have addressed years ago. It’s time for some personal space and freedom from the burden of thinking that everything is solely my responsibility.

Of course, this development has triggered a variety of responses, from warm congratulations to concerns about the site’s future in the modding community.

It appears that the concern about the website transitioning into a monthly subscription service is front and center, particularly among individuals who previously held “lifetime premium memberships” that were available in the past.

In the real comments on Nexus Mods, there’s an overwhelming wave of sincere affection and appreciation from numerous members, acknowledging Scott’s contributions that have spanned many years.

What happens to Nexus Mods now?

It’s yet unclear how Nexus Mods will evolve under its fresh leadership, but there’s no denying that Scott’s choice cannot be criticized.

In the year 2001, Robin Scott, also known as Dark0ne, established Nexus Mods initially as a fan platform dedicated to the game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Over time, it morphed into what we know today – an expansive library of mods for PC gaming.

Since 2001, as explained by Scott, they have been available daily for troubleshooting, preparing updates, processing user input, and managing community conflicts, according to his recent blog post.

The burden of managing the giant entity I brought into existence has become too much. The constant pressure of my role has led to persistent worries and health problems related to stress. I’ve come to understand that I was on the verge of exhaustion, and this state was affecting both my team and Nexus Mods as a whole. Therefore, I am convinced that the optimal move for Nexus Mods’ future is for me to relinquish control and welcome fresh leadership to guide the company with vigor and enthusiasm, aiming to make Nexus Mods the thriving modding community we all aspire it to be.

Scott appears to have poured nearly all their resources into Nexus Mods, and it’s completely understandable that they would want a break following over two decades of dedication.

Scott clarifies that Nexus Mods remains a strong team of forty members, assuring continuity even with the shift in ownership. This stability certainly points toward a promising future.
