Death Stranding 2 Feedback Was ‘Too Good’, So Hideo Kojima Made Big Changes

While testing, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was showing to be exceptionally excellent, prompting director Hideo Kojima to tweak certain aspects of the game.

According to musician Yoann Lemoine, also known as Woodkid, who is working with Kojima Productions on the soundtrack for the upcoming sequel, he shared this information during a recent conversation with Rolling Stone magazine.

During our game, there was a critical point when we held a conversation, roughly in the middle of it, that I recall. At this time, he approached me and expressed his concern by saying, “There seems to be an issue.

It seems that Kojima found himself in a bit of a predicament when he discovered that testers were enjoying the game more than anticipated. In simpler terms, he said, “To be completely open about it, we’ve been playing the game with players and the feedback has been too positive. They love it way too much. That tells me there’s something off; we need to make some adjustments.

Woodkid goes on to say that due to these concerns, Kojima made alterations to the script and certain key events within the game, aiming to make it more impactful and emotionally engaging.

Kojima explained to Woodkid that he aimed for DS2 to avoid becoming popular or mainstream. “When everyone appreciates it, it becomes mainstream, which means it’s commonplace, predictable, and already palatable for people to enjoy. I don’t want that. Instead, I hope people will eventually grow to appreciate things they initially didn’t like, as that’s where the true love for something develops.

This aligns with an interview held earlier in the year where Kojima expressed similar thoughts regarding his reluctance to cater to everyone’s preferences.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is just around the corner, releasing on 26th June, 2025.
