The tech specialists at Digital Foundry are circulating new whispers about the potential handheld version of the PS6. Each passing day seems to make this once theoretical device appear increasingly real and imminent.
Although it might still be some time off, the speculation originates from KeplerL2, a reputable AMD leaker known for disclosing many details about the PS5 Pro before its official unveiling by Sony.
Instead of delving deeper into the details over at Eurogamer.net, it seems that Sony’s latest handheld device appears to be a high-end evolution of today’s PC portable systems, such as the forthcoming ASUS ROG Xbox Allie X.
Digital Foundry anticipates that the device will have the ability to run current PS5 games at reduced resolutions or frame rates, which should still appear clear on a smaller 1080p display. It’s probable that it will also use Sony’s exclusive PSSR upscaling technique to enhance image quality, similar to how the Nintendo Switch 2 utilizes DLSS technology.
There’s chatter from several reliable sources suggesting that Sony might introduce a “lower data rate” setting for the PS5 developer kit. This feature could allow games optimized for this level to run smoothly on portable devices, but it could also add complexity for developers.
The main uncertainty we face is determining where the PS6 fits within the current landscape. Given that we anticipate a prolonged cross-generation phase, it might not cause immediate issues. However, if Sony launches another powerful console during the same timeframe as this handheld device, there are questions about its compatibility. Will it run next-gen games, or will it only be compatible with software from the PS5 era? This could potentially lead to confusion.
It appears that the PS Portal and the growing market for handheld PC devices are helping Sony understand that portability will be crucial in the future. However, what makes this significant is that it can offer hardware that works with most of its current library at a reduced cost.
