Gears of War’s PS5 Debut Axed in Japan Due to ‘Platform Policies’

In Japan, the grand PS5 console debut for Gears of War: Reloaded has been cancelled. The remaster was actually scrapped from appearing on Sony’s console in their home territory.

According to a recent post on Xbox Wire, the news is subject to certain regional rating limitations and platform guidelines.

In Japan, it’s anticipated that the game will come out on Xbox Series X|S and PC as planned. However, IGN hypothesizes that the delay might be due to the game’s signature chainsaw kills, which could potentially be classified as “mutilation” by the rating board CERO. Titles like The Callisto Protocol have faced similar hurdles in the past.

Microsoft can classify Xbox and PC games differently from the IARC standards, whereas Sony demands that every game available on the Japanese PS Store carries a CERO rating. Consequently, publishers are essentially forced to halt the PS5 release if they don’t meet these specific ratings requirements.

In a different scenario, I might have wished for the company to modify the game, similar to how they edited the initial Xbox 360 version of Gears of War, which was censored upon launch. However, considering the need for extra development resources for a single platform in a specific country, their decision seems reasonable enough.

As a gamer, I understand how disappointing it can be for fellow gamers in Japan that the anticipated game isn’t immediately available on the PS5. However, crafting accounts on PlayStation Network from other regions is quite doable. So, I suspect enthusiastic gamers in Japan will find clever ways to grab a copy of this game if they’re determined enough.
