One singer is feeling at home (of the brave).
Following Nezza, a Dominican American singer, performing the national anthem in Spanish at the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game on June 14th, she later shared her heartfelt account of the event, mentioning that she chose to sing it in Spanish despite the team’s initial preference for English.
In a TikTok post following the June 14 match, Nezza noticeably transitioned from beaming to serious as a representative of the Dodgers off-camera informed her, “Today we’ll perform the song in English; I’m not sure if this wasn’t communicated earlier,” prior to the video switching to her emotionally singing the song.
The singer penned, “Observe as the Dodgers forbid my performance of the Spanish version of the Star-Spangled Banner, which Roosevelt indeed authorized in 1945,” on top of the initial video. Later, they stated, “Defying their instruction, I went ahead and did it.
TopMob News has reached out to the Los Angeles Dodgers for comment and has not heard back.
In a different TikTok post, Vanessa Hernandez (known as Nezza) shared her feelings about the incident and was taken aback when the organization advised against singing in Spanish, especially given the recent L.A. protests sparked by ICE raids that have been advocating for change in this regard.
In the video, she expressed surprise by saying, “I hadn’t expected a ‘no,'” because they were in Los Angeles amid all the current events. Her disbelief was further emphasized when the Dodgers representative informed her, “It’s not possible.
Nezza went on, her voice choked with emotion. ‘It felt important to me, for my people,’ she explained. ‘Today, I’m proud of what I accomplished because my parents have been immigrants throughout my life, and now, they’ve been citizens for as long as I can remember.’
Apart from the “La La La” vocalist delving into the background story of “El Pendón Estrellado,” she also expressed her appreciation towards her fans.
Nezza expressed her gratitude for all the kind messages, adding, “You all mean a great deal to me.” It’s safe to conclude that she won’t be visiting that stadium anytime soon, but her affection for everyone remains strong.
Despite the social media personality asserting she wouldn’t be accepted, an LA Dodgers team representative informed The Los Angeles Times that no repercussions would stem from the organization due to her performance, and they would welcome her back to the stadium in the future.
